Hi,

Looks like Sup 720 has many types of memories - Are those used for any particular specific type of file storage?

flash :

bootflash :

sup-bootflash or sup-bootdisk:

disk0:

disk1:

Dynamic RAM : - Used to load the files , IOS, and other tables etc...

Also what is the function of bootldr file is it similar to UNIX boot loader? Any link on Cisco.com

please share the experience.

Thanks

Subodh

disk0: and disk1: refer to addditonal onboard disk storage.

Hi Subodh,

These memories are specific to processor level.

There are two types of processors in the supervisor card.

1.Switching processor

2. Routing processor

Memory of switching processor is sup-bootflash

Memory of Routing processor is bootflash

The booting sequence of the supervisor would be SP and then followed by RP.

Pls refer the below link.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/12.2SX/configuration/guide/intro.pdf

As a best practice, always the bootvariable should point to the image in sup-bootflash since SP boots up first.

Disk 0 & Disk 1 are the external memory slots. You can insert a compact flash card in it.

This will be used sometimes if the IOS image is of larger size than that of sup bootdisk or bootflash

When you enter the boot command without any   arguments, the switch attempts to automatically boot the system by  using  the information in the BOOT environment variable, if any. If you  supply  an image name for the file-url variable, the boot command attempts to boot the specified image.

When you set boot loader boot command options, they  are executed immediately and apply only to the  current boot loader  session. These settings are not saved for the next  boot operation.

Hope this answers your questions.

Cheers
