Supervisor Failed Over to Standby

Mano11
Level 1
Level 1

Hi Guys,

We have a Cisco WS-C4500X-16 switch with a 2 Supervisors, one of the active supervisor has failed over and there are no relevant logs indicating why it failover to the standby. I have capture the following logs below. Currently, the standby supervisor is running as the active one.

Would it be possible if someone could advise what has caused the failover to happen? There are no crash file generated.

Good day,

From the output below, it looks like one Supervisor Engine could not listen to the other:

014331: *Jan 7 13:31:14.674 ADST: %C4K_REDUNDANCY-4-KEEPALIVE_WARNING: STANDBY:Keepalive messages from peer Supervisor are missing for 27 seconds

However, there may be several reasons as to why that could happen.

Can you provide the output of "show platform crashdump" please? That can provide more information.

Hope this helps.

Eduardo.

Hi Educruz,

Thanks for your comment.

I'm afraid there is no crashdumps.

HS-C4500-01#show platform crashdump
Last Power Failure: 05/21/2016 09:12:00

No crash data available.

Any other suggestion?

Understood, thank you for that information.

The approach I would follow would be:

  • Check in any monitoring tool if there were signs of some L2 instablity (interfaces with high input rate/low output rate), L1 issues in the VSL link (CRCs, input errors, etc.), or high CPU utilization in the switch.
  • Check if there were any recent changes by the time the issue occurred.
  • Check the output of "show platform slavekinfo"
  • Check if there are any other logs in your syslog server from a week ago up to this point.

On the other hand, software version "cat4500e-universalk9.SPA.03.04.00.SG.151-2.SG.bin" is one of the early releases and it is now deferred. One of the things to take into consideration is to upgrade the VSS to a newer IOS (an upgrade of the ROMmon system is needed too).

Hope this helps.

Eduardo.

Hi Educruz,

I got another question. Could it be related to this bug below?

Bug CSCui71792 : https://bst.cloudapps.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCui71792/?referring_site=bugquickviewredir

Logs for the switch :

This is very good information,

Unfortunately, the logic of the bug describes that the PDS channel must show failures under the "Fail delivery attempts" section, but in the output shown below from your switch, it says zero.

Due to the software version, the cause would be most likely a bug, but we do not have enough information to confirm so.

The error message about Keepalives missed between Supervisor is very generic, that is why it would be important to collect some other information to get to the cause, but ultimately the highly recommended action to avoid this from happening again, is an IOS upgrade.

Kind regards,

Eduardo.

I think I got a good idea why.  3.4.0 is a very, very, very old IOS.  I suspect the primary unit hit a memory/CPU bug and bounced.

The high uptime isn't of any help either.

My recommendation is to find time and upgrade the IOS.  Try something in the 3.6.X train.

As requested, i have uploaded the logs into notepad and attached it to this post.

Initially there was multiple interfaces were down. Upon checking, we noticed that the active supervisor failed over. There are no high or low input and output rate on the interfaces. The interfaces are running fine. There are no CRC or input errors noticed on the interfaces. I have also checked on the CPU usage and there is no spikes noticed based from the history and utilization logs. At this point of time, there was no recent changes done.

I understand that you have mentioned that the IOS that is running on the switch is a deferred one. Since you have mentioned to perform an upgrade on the switch with the latest IOS, i will look into this further and will let you know. However, i need to understand why did the fail-over happened. Please see the attached logs.

Please post the complete output to the command "dir slavecrashinfo:".

Hi Leo,

Oh great. Possible silent crash.

Ok, another thing ...
Can someone please console into the standby appliance (not to be confused for the secondary appliance) and issue the command "sh version"?
Remember, the standby appliance is the ACTIVE unit until it rebooted/crashed.

Question:  Was someone logged into the switch immediately BEFORE the crash?   If someone did, I'm suspecting it's CSCul00025.
