Hi All,
We are in the process of designing a big network for our client. The total nodes in the network is 2500 and currently only 1300 are going to be used for Data.
Site Details
1 Building - 6 Floors ( 4 wings in each floors )
Each floor - 200 ( will accomodate currently )
400 ( future scalability )
Switches
Access Layer - 60 Switches ( 24pt)
110 Switches (24pt - future scalability )
Distribution - 12 Switches ( 24pt)
Core - 2 Switches
Please clarify the following
1. If I am considering gigabit switch in the access layer with 52gbps and 77mpps( considering 10gig speed in future ), network will work without congestion. But how much traffic the switch will push in the uplink ?
2. Assuming each access switch will push 1gbps(2 uplinks) of traffic to the distribution switch, In my scenario I will have 8 access switches in one floor which will connect to the distribution, so I have to select a distribution switch which can handle only this 8 gbps ?
3. On what basis we need to select the distribution switch ? I am not going to connect any core switch in it!!
4. The same queston arises in the Core switch selection also! Do we need to consider about the traffic coming from the distribution switches ? If say all my 12 distribution from 6 floors ar pushing ( 12 gbps for 1gig uplink or 120 gbps for 10gig uplink ), what switch we need to size here ?
5. If backplane and forwarding rate is the factor we use to select or size a switch, In most of the cases the switches are going to push the traffic only in or two uplink!! Then why considering backplane and forwarding rate ??
6. How the buffer works in egress ? When all the 24 users connected to a switch try to talk to a server connected to a core switch, the backplane of the access switch is going to take all traffic and will push at line rate speed, but how a single uplink handles this ??
7. If my understandng is right, the switchport would not utilize more than 30 or 40% of its bandwidth. So in this case what is the difference we are going to bring in the access layer when we deploy 10/100 switch or 1gig ports switch?
8. How much traffic can be pushed by the end user to the connected switch port ? Please give the values for 10/100 & gig ports
9. When 52gbps & 77mpps is enough for line rate performance in a 24pt gig switch, why we have some models with 160gbps and 101mpps ?
10. where we need 10/100 or 1gig switch in a network apart from DC ?
My solution
access laye - 2960
distribution - 370X
core - 6509

Request you ppl to kindly provide your experience and share your suggestions, views. Thanks!
Shoud you have any clarifications, please revert. I would love to clarify on any doubts or missing piece in the discussion.

note : customer do not want to go with 48pt switch. each floor will have 8 access switch currently and 17 in future. No Ip voice or video. servers - apps, DB, storage

Modification on point 3. I am not going to connect any server to the distribution switch
5. In most of the cases the switches are going to push the traffic only in one or two uplink!!
