Switchport config and ESX - Etherchannel

Hi all,

hope somone can help and explain me the following configuration situation.

In an existing network are multiple ESX Server. All ESX Server have the same network configuration.

VMNIC3 on Switchport 1/0/33
VMNIC4 on Switchport 1/0/29
VMNIC5 on Switchport 1/0/37

There is no Portchannel configuration on Cisco Switch Catalyst WS-C3750X-48

-----

port-channel load-balance src-dst-mac
!
interface GigabitEthernet1/0/29
 snmp trap mac-notification change added
!
interface GigabitEthernet1/0/33
 snmp trap mac-notification change added
!
interface GigabitEthernet1/0/37
 snmp trap mac-notification change added

-------

All works fine, why doesn´t need Etherchannel Trunk?

Regards Marco

Hi,

You don't necessarily need a Portchannel when connecting ESX servers.  If the VMNICs are configure with HA and if one link fails the others take over and forward traffic. You only need a trunk if you are passing multiple vlans from ESX host to the switch if not you don't need it.
