Tracking down the far end of an RSPAN

Hello everyone,

I have inherited a network that has some RSPAN configurations on it, but with no documentation on what they are for. Is there a way - other than gathering and searching the configs of every device on the network - to find where the other end of an RSPAN is?

On one of my cores, there is a session to span one of the Gb interfaces into an RSPAN VLAN, but I do not know where in the network there is a session to span the VLAN back to a port.

TIA

Russell

Hello Russell,

you need to find out the path of the RSPAN vlan

show vlan

should tell you what port(s) are associated with it

you find who is the next device by interface description or CDP you connect to it and you check for monitor commands

if no monitor command mentioning the rspan vlan as source is found

show vlan

and you go to the next device until you find the destination device

with ERSPAN you could find the other endpoint at once as it is specified in ERSPAN configuration, but not with RSPAN

Hope to help

Giuseppe
