By looking at the diagram, can a trunk link be formed between the two switches? Or would I need a router on each side?

Yes it should form a trunk if the lan extender allows it , also a 3550 is a layer 3 switch/router .

Dear shimabuku,
Yes i am agree with Mr.Glen.Grant. 3550 Switch has a character of Router/Switch that is called it is Layer 3 switch. So that you can make trunk between two switches. You no need to add router on this network.
Thanks and regards,

Friend,
A lan extender is nothing but to extend the area covered by a switch/hub, so it should be a trunk anyhow it is suggested to check the documentation for the extender.
hope it helps !
