UNHANDLED ROMMON EXCEPTION on WS-C4948-10GE

Level 1

Hello,

While attempting to load a new IOS (cat4500-entservicesk9-mz.150-2.SG2) onto a 4948. I put new IOS on the 4948, deleted the old IOS, and reloaded it; ensuring that IOS was to be loaded from flash. That is went I noticed the UNHANDLED EXCEPTION and the 4948 continually reboots. I, then, changed it to have it boot from TFTP (same IOS) and same problem. Does any have an idea what might be going on?

Hi,

Your ROMMON version is 12.2(31r)SGA, which is affected by DDTS CSCsw91043. This Bug is related to Rommon Code and you are required to upgrade it to 12.2(31r)SGA4.

Please find the link below for instructions:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/release/note/OL_9592.html#wp305422

New ROMMON file can be found at:

http://www.cisco.com/cisco/software/release.html?mdfid=279636820&release=12.2(31r)SGA4&relind=AVAILABLE&flowid=3589&softwareid=280805687&rellifecycle=&reltype=latest

Note that the above link is for 4948 10 Gig Ethernet switch.

Hi,

The switch might end up in a continuous reboot sequence if the boot variable is not set to the correct system image file and proper destination device. For example, the configuration register value of 0x2102 requires that a boot variable is specified by issuing the boot system flash configuration command

  • Issue the show bootvar command to check the current boot variable
  • Ensure that you specify the correct image with below boot sequence.

     Example:

     #boot system flash bootflash:cat4500e-ipbasek9-mz.122-53.SG2.bin

  • Save the config
  • Check the boot variable again to make sure it is set properly so that the switch boots up the correct system file on the next reboot. Issue the show bootvar command in order to do this

The 4948 is in ROMMON now, so I do not this those commands will work.

Hi,

Sorry for the late response. Please see below detail to recover from Rommon mode,

Issue the dir bootflash: command to list the files present in the bootflash, or issue the dir slot0: command to list the files present in the Compact Flash device.

Example:

rommon 1 >dir bootflash:

   File size                  Checksum      File name
   --------------------------------------------------
   6516904 bytes (0x6370a8)   0x7b7edb21    cat4000-is-mz.121-11b.EW

   Total space = 61341696 bytes, Available = 54824664 bytes

rommon 2 >dir slot0:

   File size                  Checksum      File name
   --------------------------------------------------
   6516904 bytes (0x6370a8)   0x7b7edb21    cat4000-is-mz.121-11b.EW

   Total space = 128057344 bytes, Available = 121540312 bytes

Note:
The reason the switch reboots continuously is because the system image file name specified does not exist, but there is a valid file in the bootflash and slot0:. Also, the system image file name specified is case sensitive. If it is not specified correctly, it causes a continuous reboot

If the required system image file present in the bootflash:, you can issue the boot bootflash:<filename> command to boot the switch. Issue the boot slot0:<filename> command if you want to load the system from the file present in slot0:

Example:
rommon 2 >boot bootflash:cat4000-is-mz.121-11b.EW

Once the switch restore, Plesae check the previous steps which i shared already to avoid continuous reload

I entered the follwoing command.

boot bootflash:cat4500-entservicesk9-mz.150-2.SG2.bin

As you can see the file is in the flash.

rommon 2 >dir bootflash:

   File size                  Checksum      File name

   --------------------------------------------------

  19459812 bytes (0x128eee4)  0x2155b5b6    cat4500-entservicesk9-mz.150-2.SG2.bin

   Total space = 61341696 bytes, Available = 41881756 bytes

While rebooting, I see the following statement in the output, but continue to receive "UNHANDLED ROMMON EXCEPTION at PC=0453ab5c".

******** The system will autoboot now ********

config-register = 0xa441

Autobooting using the first file from bootflash.....

Hi,

I have noticed that you have config-register set to a value 0xa441 (is it an error or a leftover of previous troubleshooting? I did not see such value being used before). Could you try setting it to default 0x2102, please? Command is "confreg 0x2102" in ROMMON or "configi-reg 0x2102" in IOS config mode.

If it still fails, please share the console logs showing complete boot sequence from boot start to the crash following by reset to ROMMON.
