Upgrade 6500 IOS 12.2(17d)SXB11a to 15.1SY

Hello Experts,

we have a customer who needs to perform upgrade on their Core 6500 Switch IOS from version 12.2(17d)SXB11a to 15.1SY.

Is this a supported upgrade path and can it be done directly?

Hi,

Sup-720 with MSFC3, you can upgrade directly to 151-1.SY

Just make sure you have enough flash, as the image is about 115Mb.

I would also add to please read the release notes and be doubly sure that all linecards that you have are supported.

Please I also want to ask about the feature set license upgrade on the same switch

Currently, their SMARTNET covers the switch with 12.2 feature set ADV IP W/MPLS/IPV6/SSH/3DES + BGP, but they want to upgrade to 15.1 Adv. Ent Services. Can they use the same SMARTNET contract to download it?

If no, what will they order to have the access to download it?

Hi,

Yes, they can use the same Smartnet contract, but they have to pay the difference between adv IP and adv enterprise.

If I remember correctly, the difference is about $5000 (list price). It is also a good ides to check the pricing with their Cisco sale person.

Like they will pay online or what?

I mean if the current SMARTNET can access the file and download it, how then does the payment come in?

You can download it with current Smartnet, but firstly, that is not legal and secondly, when they call TAC with an issue and they only paid for IP and now they have Enterprise on the their device, TAC mostly likely will not support that image.

They need to talk to the sals guy about this.

Thanks a lot for this info, but what I need clarification for is how they make the payment.

We know that every Cisco product is ordered using an SKU, but in this case what part number will apply and who will order it or pay on their behalf?

HI Abiodun,

They can talk to there sales/account department about this and inturn they will get in touch with cisco to get the contract changes from Enterprise to Advance services.  ( they probably get in touch with Cisco sales people negotiate it and buy the contract with some difference value between the Ent and Adv services.)
