Upgrading IOS on SUP720 with minimum interruption

We need to upgrade the IOS on a Catalyst 6500 SUP720-3B and wanted to keep the downtime to a minimum. The current IOS is a version of 12.2(18)SXF16 and need to upgrade to 12.2(33)SXI. The approach that we planned to take was to add an additional teporary SUP720-3B with the upgraded IOS to the existing chassis that has a single SUP. The sequence that we plan to follow is this -

1) Insert the new temp SUP72-3B with upgraded IOS to the switch.

2) Failover to the newly added SUP(downtime of 3 to 4 mins to services).

3) Reload the original SUP720-3B with the new image.

4) Failover to the original SUP720-3B(No downtime).

5) Remove the temporary SUP added for the upgrade.

My query is this - Do I need to do any config after I add the redundant SUP720-3B, to get the running/startup config on the original SUP to get copied to the newly added SUP or is this automatic?

If anyone notices something wrong in the steps mentioned above, please advice.

Thanks in advance

Ralph

Yes with these steps, you should be able to do this with the minimum downtime.

- well you don't have to configure anything on the spare supervisor. the configurations would get copied automatically when you do a failover. All you should do is configure the redundancy to SSO on the switch. And you should be good to go.

Hope this answers your query on this post.

So in short, just adding the below on the current config is all that is needed to get the config in sync, right ?

redundancy
mode sso
main-cpu
  auto-sync running-config

Yes, thats correct - configure redundance mode to SSO and auto-sync running-config - should be sufficient.

Hmmmm ... Maybe I'm reading the documentation wrong but this will work????  Running two blades on a single chassis with TWO DIFFERENT IOS will work??
