urgent help 6500 - catos

Hello Experts

Need some urgent help, power went off and returned and found cannot login to catalyst 6500 routing module, the box is runing catos

error on accessing box

Username: corehq

Authentication Failed : Proxy failure

also the module 15 sub shows as 'no'

the catos is old so it doesnt accept the reload command

Hi Vishal,

Usually show module command output lists the Base model and MSFC at the top of the output. The output also lists the integrated PFC card separately, but at the end of the output.

We could see the the Supervisor as well as MSFC which showing active as module 15 and Standby MSFC as module 16

Determine if this error message or a similar message displays for the standby MSFC when you issue the telnet msfc_ip_address or session 15 or session 16 command:

• In order to gain access to the MSFC, issue the session slot_number command, and then the show version command.

• If you use a console connection to the MSFC, you can also issue the switch console command. This command gives you direct console connectivity to the MSFC. However, you can only reach the MSFC that is located on the active Supervisor Engine module. You cannot access the MSFC on the standby Supervisor Engine module

Note: To exit the MSFC:

1. exit command if session is used.
2. Ctrl + C three times if switch console is used.

Also note that the MSFC can disappear from the show module command output if the device fails to boot properly. The MSFC or MSFC2 can fail to boot properly because of one of these issues:

1. A corrupted Cisco IOS Software image
2. A misseated bootflash
3. The drop of the MSFC or MSFC2 to ROM monitor (ROMmon)

Please try to verify the MSFC status thru console, and if you couldnt reach still, then we need to verify the above three causes.

I am suspecting that this authentication failed is related with TACACS authentication. Could you please verify once again.

there is no TACACS for now

How to check the health of the modules or the box

6500 series with SUP 720  - is this still supported by cisco support

Vishal,

Your TACACS is probly down due to your layer3 engine not running. IE no ip routing.

If you have your console cable plugged into slot  5 and you can get the catos prompt with enable.

Like:-

switchname(enable)

Try typing

switch console 15

May be your layer3 engine is stuck with rommon

As Alex said, please verify the both MSFC thru console, so that you can verify its status whether, it stuck on ROMMON or up.
