Virtual Switch System (VSS) - Standby chassie interfaces do not show

Hello,

I just configured VSS for the first time and while everything seem to have converged accordingly I seem to have issues with the standby chassis. Looking into show run I see the 2nd chassie interfaces "Gigabitethernet 2/x/y". But looking in show interfaces status, I can only see the interfaces belonging to chassie 1. Same thing when I issue show module, only chassie 1 module shows.

Same thing shows if I specify the virtual switch for each show command;

VSS-Switch#show module switch 1

Very grateful for help....!

Hi,

What is the output of "sh switch virt"?

also, can you post the vss configs?

HTH

Thanks for the reply! Here it goes (show commands & config);

Show commands;

SwitchVSS#show switch virtual

Switch mode                  : Virtual Switch

Virtual switch domain number : 100

Local switch number          : 1

Local switch operational role: Virtual Switch Active

Peer switch number           : 2

Peer switch operational role : Virtual Switch Standby

SwitchVSS#show switch virtual role

Switch  Switch Status  Priority     Role    Session   ID

        Number         Oper(Conf)           Local    Remote

------------------------------------------------------------------

LOCAL    1     UP       255(255)    ACTIVE   0        0

REMOTE   2     UP       100(100)    STANDBY  5943     6769

The configuration;

Switch-1(config)# switch virtual domain 100

Switch-1(config-vs-domain)# switch 1 priority 255

Switch-1(config-vs-domain)# exit

Switch-2(config)# switch virtual domain 100

Switch-2(config-vs-domain)# switch 2 priority 100

Switch-2(config-vs-domain)# exit

Switch-1(config)# interface port-channel 1

Switch-1(config-if)# switch virtual link 1

Switch-1(config-if)# no shutdown

Switch-1(config-if)# exit

Switch-2(config)# interface port-channel 2

Switch-2(config-if)# switch virtual link 2

Switch-2(config-if)# no shutdown

Switch-2(config-if)# exit

Switch-1(config)# interface range tengigabitethernet 5/4-5

Switch-1(config-if)# channel-group 1 mode on

Switch-1(config-if)# no shutdown

Switch-2(config)# interface range tengigabitethernet 5/4-5

Switch-2(config-if)# channel-group 2 mode on

Switch-2(config-if)# no shutdown

Hi,

U need to try below

show interface status switch (switch no) module (module no#).

By default the chassis will show the info from active switch.

In addition u r missing switch mode virtual command under the vitrual domain .

Thanks

Are both switches configured in SSO mode?

Also, as the Mahmood noted: add switch mode virtual command under the vitrual domain for both switches.

HTH

I can't see any "switch mode" command in virtual domain configuration mode ? All I can set are the Switch number and priority. Of course I added the "switch convert mode virtual" to both chassis before restart.

I did it all over again and verified that both chassis were indeed configured for operating with SSO.This is a Single-SUP Dual-Chassie setup. Still no modules show under the "show module switch 2".

SwitchVSS#show int status switch 1

Gi1/6/46                        disabled     routed       auto   auto 10/100/1000BaseT

Gi1/6/47                        disabled     routed       auto   auto 10/100/1000BaseT

Gi1/6/48                        disabled     routed       auto   auto 10/100/1000BaseT

Po1                             notconnect   routed       auto   auto

SwitchVSS#show int status switch 2

/// No switchports is shown...

SwitchVSS#

Interesting fact is that the VSL link (Po1) shows "not connect". However, they show active;

SwitchVSS# show switch virtual link

VSL Status : UP

VSL Uptime : 13 minutes

VSL SCP Ping : Pass

VSL ICC Ping : Pass

VSL Control Link : Te1/5/5

PS: Spelling error on the configuration. This is what I added;

Switch-1(config)# switch virtual domain 100

Switch-1(config-vs-domain)# switch 1

Switch-1(config-vs-domain)# switch 1 priority 255

Switch-1(config-vs-domain)# exit

Switch-2(config)# switch virtual domain 100

Switch-2(config-vs-domain)# switch 2

Switch-2(config-vs-domain)# switch 2 priority 100

Switch-2(config-vs-domain)# exit

I managed to solve this. It showed that I recived the supervisors  with different IOS running on them. Hence only RPR mode initiated. By  copying the IOS running on the active supervisor to the standby and then  initiating a redundancy reload peer everything went up!

VSS-Switch#show module switch all

This is bad programming on Cisco's part but the way to see just specific module interface status on the second switch in a VSS pair is the following command.

Show interface status module (1-20). This allows enough room for 2 4510 series switches with fully loaded modules.

So lets say you want to see Module 2 on the second switch. The command would be "show interface status module 12"

I think it would have been better programmed as "show interface status switch 2 module 2"
