VS-S720-10G-3C Line Card compatibility

alireza-nouri
Level 1
Level 1

Hi all,

My company has recently bought a VS-S720-10G-3C to replace with old sup720-3b, we have a 6509-E with two "WS-X6704-10GE (WS-F6700-CFC)" on slots 1&2. When I power the unit on, the new supervisor comes up and working, but the 10G modules go to "PwrDown" state after some errors.

The question is: Is "VS-S720-10G-3C" compatible with "WS-X6704-10GE (WS-F6700-CFC)" or it could be another problem?

Here are some info:

Dear Reza,

I upgraded the ROMMON version to 12.2(18r)S1 but it didn't work.

Hi Alireza,

You may have to upgrade the ROMMON version to 12.2(18r)S1 or later.

Also, your version IOS should support the module, but overall 12.2(33)SXH is over 8 years old.

I would recommend upgrading the IOS to a newer version as well.

Have a look at this doc for more info:

Hi,

Try loading a newer version of IOS.  Maybe SXi or SXj.

HTH

Can you post your show mod again Please? And also show version. I think you need a minimum IOS to run 6704-10GE

Hi all,

I removed all of the line cards except sup. and 10G modules, upgraded the IOS to 15.1(1)SY1. I even tried this on another chassis with the exact line cards, but it didn't work.

Here are the results:

Which Fan Tray do you have? WWhat Power Supplies are in the Chassis?

I only have one vs-s720-10g-3c, and I can't replace and check if another one will work correctly.

here are the show power command output:

Hi,

Just one question, if you use back your sup720-3b, are the modules coming up?

Hi,

Yes, when I use the sup720-3b, everything is fine and fully operational.

We have to consider two options

1)Your VS-720-10ge is faulty

2)The way diagnostic check is done is changed from 3b to 10ge.

To isolate,

Do you have any other modules other than 6704 to check? AS it looks like other than the sup, all modules power is down.

I do have ws-x6516a-gbic and ws-x6516-ge-tx and all of them go to PwrDown state with the new sup. after initial boot checks.

Do these cards work in any other chassis with the same supervisor and code? Any attempts to physically re-seat these cards helped?

Endorsed by mistake. Ignore it. We really need to have an undo for endorsements.

Dear Alireza

Is it possible the problem of daughter card? I saw a "Cisco Noted document" http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/field-notices/637/fn63743.html". The error message is same as yours"C6KPWR-SP-4-DISABLED: power to module in slot 1 set off (Module  Failed SCP dnld) "

Your line cards are older than the VS-S720-10G-3C according to Serial number of your inventory. So the VS-S720-10G-3C daughter card maybe not compatible with line card. So could you remove daughter card of Supervisor and line card, then test all items again ?
