VSS exponential increase in number of port channels supported

Trying to understand how/why using VSS on a pair of 4500x increases the number of port channel supported. Each device supports 64, but when paired with VSS its 256. I would imagine double, but not 4x the number of supported port channels.

any ideas?

Very good question. This should be the way it is designed/coded (not an answer to your how/why).
