VSS Supervisor with different Hardware Revision

Aldo Pellini

Hi,

For an hardware replacement we have to replace a VS-S720-10G in a VSS standby member but new one unit has a Hardware and Firmware release newer than unit installed on current active system.

We have installed same IOS and followed replacement procedure and we are ready to attach new supervisor for re-creating VSS.

But before doing that we want to know if there is any incompatibility if you install two supervisors of same model but with different hardware revision.

On manual is not clear if this doesn't affect on VSS as reported below:

Table 4-1 VSS Hardware Requirements

Hardware
Count
Requirements

Chassis

  2

The VSS is available on chassis that support VS-S720-10G supervisor engines and WS-X6708-10G switching modules.

Note The two chassis need not be identical.

Supervisor Engines

  2

The VSS requires Supervisor Engine 720 with 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports. You must use either two VS-S720-10G-3C or two VS-S720-10G-3CXL supervisor engine modules.

The two supervisor engines must match exactly.

Switching Modules

  2+

The VSS requires 67xx series switching modules.

The VSS does not support classic, CEF256, or dCEF

Hi Aldo,

It is the model types that have to be the same.

As the book says:-

"Supervisor Engines
The VSS requires Supervisor Engine 720 with 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports. You must use either two VS-S720-10G-3C or two VS-S720-10G-3CXL supervisor engine modules."

Say your VSS had beenup and running for a couple of years then a SUPY went
faulty.
The chances are that when you receive a new card the H/W versionis very likely to be newer.

Just make sure the model of SUPY are exactly the same.
