vtp mode change

We have a main switch at our main office & another switch in one of our smaller branch offices.
Both these offices are very close to each other & they are connected over physical links.

Office-B1 will be moved to a new connection & new subnets will be created.
Currently both switches are in VTP server mode. My question is, if we start creating other vlans on the office-B1 switch while still being connected to Main-office switch will this affect the Main-office switch?

The steps i will be using is:-

1. Change vtp mode on Office-B1 switch to transparent mode , while it is still being connected to Main office switch
2. create new vlans on Office-B1

(final state will be office-B1 will no longer have direct physical link to Main office switch)

In doing so, will it impact the main office switch in terms of its vlans? I am concerned that the Main office switch may get affected if i change the vtp mode to transparent on Office-B1 switch.

Outputs from both switches are given here. Please help.

Office-B1#sh vtp status

hi,

there should be no impact on the Main-office switch when changing Office-B1 switch to VTP transparent mode.

Office-B1 switch retains its VLANs but you'll need to manually configure new VLANs once it becomes VTP transparent.

i also suggest changing VTP version 2 on Main-office switch to have a consistency.

it's always wise to perform these on a change window with minimal user traffic.

Thanks.

So, just in case things go wrong on the office-B1 switch (as the vtp mode will be changed on it) ; what would be the workaround - putting it back to VTP server?

my worry is more for any impact to the main office switch when doing the vtp mode change to transparent on Office-B1 switch.

hi,

it's always prudent to do a roll back if things went wrong.

that's why i recommended to perform changes in a change window (if your IT policy has one).
