VTP type-2 configuration incompatible

I am looking for some assistance in the reason why 'Type-2 consistency status' is failed for the reason of 'VTP type-2 configuration incompatible'.  I cannot find much of a reason in the logs or Nexus docs as to what is the cause.

Hardware: Nexus 7010

Kickstart: version 5.2(1)

System:    version 5.2(1)

Below is some output for reference.  I cleaned up the consistency output a tad to make it a bit easier to read.  Thanks in advance for any advise.

Hi,

Could you please share the output of 'show vtp status' as well from both switches?

Did you try removing and reapplying the VTP configuration to see if it recovers it?

Thanks,

Andras

Thanks for following up.

Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your reply. I don't see any difference in the outputs. I would suggest to try the following steps.

- Try changing VTP mode to server and reapplying the VTP Domain configuration, then changing back to transparent mode.

- If the above step does not help, try disabling VTP feature entirely, by using ‘no feature vtp’ and re-enabling it with ‘feature vtp’. Afterwards, reapply your VTP configuration.

This seems to be a cosmetic issue only, and hopefully the above steps will help to recover from this.

Best regards,

Andras

Thank you very much

Hi Beausoleilb1,

I am running the exact same version of NX-OS (5.2.1) you're running and I am running into the exact same issue. Were you able to resolve your issue ? Could you tell what you did ?

Thanks !!

D.

Hi D

were this issue observed before upgrade to 5.2.1?

Aso have you noticed whether this inconsictency causes any issues with traffic forwarding?

Have you recently rebooted your chassis (not sup reload)?

Have you tried action list described by Andras earlier?

Regards,

Alex

I am running 6.0 (2) and have exact same problem.

#show vtp status will show everything is fine.

Im running VTP Server mode on the NX pair

Hi Khoa

Please try to perform actions described by Andras earlier.

In most casaes they resolve the issue.

Regards,

Alex

I know doing that would fix it. Also restarting the VDC also fix it.

But it's a bug. I want to know if Cisco has a plan to fix it ? Im running the lastest OS version

Hi Khoa

As you can see, such behavior is observed in different nx-os versions which can be caused by different reasons - small missprogramming, or software bug.

So if you need to find a root cause in your particular case I would suggest you ot open a TAC case.

Have a great holidays Khoa

I would like to add that I am setting a new pair of Nexus 7010's up and am having the same symptom.

Hi,

just ran into the same problem....

I've got two pairs of N5548UP running 5.2(1)N1(1), each pair in different DCs. I think the only solution to that is setting both Nexus to the same mode. (Server/Server, Client/Client etc.). Everytime when I switch, it comes up with VTP inconsistency.

Btw. does someone know if version 3 will be supported in near future? I don't want to run new customer network in version 2 :-).

Cheers,

Tarek

Cisco docs state that vpc pairs must have the same VTP config (client or server for ex) :

  • When deployed with vPC, both vPC switches must be configured identically. vPC performs a Type 2 consistency check for VTP configuration parameters.

7009s running 6.1.3, and same. remove vtp and re-add, even in transparent mode caused the issue.
