What does 'not a gateway' mean?

Hi All,

Today I issued "show ip traffic" on the 2960 Catalyst switch, and found '4554734 not a gateway' in Rcvd section. Somebody here can tell me what 'not a gateway' mean? Is that normal?

Much appreciated.

Robert,

My guess is that you have configured an IP address on the 2960 for management purposes only (it is not configured as a router) but some other device on that subnet is trying to use it as it default gateway.

It's normal. It means that the packet isn't routed out a gateway and stays on the local segment.

John,

This counter is incremented when the device is not configured as an ip router (no ip routing) and you receive an ip packet for a destination that is not your local IP address.
