Wireless AP's are not coming up of new Catalyst 4510R-E PoE line card.

Level 1

We have recently purchased Catalyst 4510R-E with two PoE line cards. When we connected Cisco Wireless APs to Cat4510 PoE ports it did not come up. These WAPs are working fine on other Cisco switch with PoE ports so there is no issue with WAP. We have received two CAT4510 and on both two slots are populated with PoE line cards and on both switches WAPs are not coming up. PC/desktops are working fine on these ports.

Is there any configuration required on Cat4510 to enable PoE feature.

Regards

Ashok

CAT4510-1#

Hi Ashok,

you need to instruct the switch to provide power and to make sure that CDP is enable globally and under the interfaces you have connected your AP to.

i'll check the command for you but if i am not wrong is power inline

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/12.2/25ew/configuration/guide/PoE.html

Hope this helps

Alessio

Are you sure you have a WAP patched to the switchport?  The output to the command "sh power inline" shows nothing.

Choose an interface where you think there's a WAP at the far end and run the following command:

1.  test cable tdr interface ;

2.  Wait for 61 seconds;

3.  sh cable tdr interface ; and

4.  Post the output to command #3.

Leolaohoo/Alessio,

We moved WAP on another switch as WAP were not coming on new cat 4510.

I have asked local contact to connect one of the WAP on Cat 4510 PoE port.

Will revert back to you once I connect device to port.

Thanks for help.

Regards

Ashok

Run the TDR nonetheless. You'll know if the ports are patched or not.

Who knows, maybe the Ethernet are patched to the console port.

Sent from Cisco Technical Support iPad App

Leolaohoo,

We have moved on of the WAP on port Gi1/48 on Cat 4510. We ran the command given by you. Waited over 61 sec. But did not get any results.

Till now:

- CDP glabally and on interface is enabled.

- power inline auto command added on int Gi1/48.

Still we are seeing port down-down.

Thanks

Ashok

Hi Ashok,

Could you share the below outputs to investigate further on this issue.

The switch can measure the actual PoE consumption for an 802.3af-compliant PoE module, and it displays the measured PoE in both the show power module and show power detail commands.

#show power module
#show power detail

This command will helpful to know the hardware health of both PoE modules

#show diagnostic result module 1 detail
#show diagnostic result module 2 detail

Regards,

Aru

Regards, Aru *** Please rate if the post useful ***

The output of the show power inline seems to give away the exact issue:

CAT4510-1#sh power inline

Available:0(w)  Used:0(w)  Remaining:0(w)

What power supplies are you using. It looks like the power supplies you have in the chassis do not support PoE. There's nothing you need to configure on the switch to make PoE work.

rtjensen4,

You are right. As per quote we have ordered.

PWR-C45-1400AC -  Catalyst 4500 1400W AC Power Supply (Data Only)
PWR-C45-1400AC/2 - Catalyst 4500 1400W AC Power Supply Redundant(Data Only)

Do you know what command I need to enter to verify type of power supply installed in the Cat 4510 chassic?

Thanks

Ashok

Hi Ashok,

Please execute show power detail which show the detail of the power supply installed on the chassis,

Example:

Module Inline Power Summary (Watts)

All available Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series power supplies can be used for data-only deployments, which typically require just a few hundred watts. For deployments that dictate support for PoE power, Cisco offers several options.

The Cisco Catalyst 4500E Series offers AC power with several internal supplies: 1000W (data only), 1400W (data only), 1300W (data and PoE), 2800W (data and PoE), 4200W (data and PoE), and 6000W (data and PoE). When 5500W or less is required, the 4200W power supply can provide 5500W while protecting the chassis from a power or power-supply subunit failure.

All Cisco Catalyst 4500 AC power supplies are single phase and operate between 100VAC and 240VAC.
The Cisco Catalyst 4500E Series has two DC power options: one is optimized for data-only deployments in service provider central offices (part number PWR-C45-1400DC), and the other is used for high-power PoE deployments (PWR-C45-1400DC-P). All DC power supplies are designed to operate between -44VDC and -72VDC

Try adding command "power inline auto" and see what happens. Maybe somehow someone did a "power inline never" command .  What size power supplies are they in the box?

Glen,

I have enabled power inline auto already. Still I am having issue.
