Dear community,

Can we upgrade the WS-C3850-12X48U  stack switch in install mode directly from  03.07.04E to 16.09.06 or we need to go for any intermediate release.

Read the release noted  and understand the caveats :  ( 16.9.X  onwards smart License), it also upgrade micro code, so take bit longer for upgrade and maintenance window,.

How to Ask The Cisco Community for Help

Hello

Just like to add a micro code upgrade can be a little off putting when its performed as past of a ios upgrade  and it does take time to complete as @balaji.bandi stated but it does eventually work so be patient and don’t think the ios upgrade has failed

WARNINGIf the stack is running Dot1X, DO NOT UPGRADE to anything past 16.6.X.

Upgrade from 3.X.X to 16.X.X is possible with one "jump".  Highly recommended in using the Install Mode upgrade method.

Why wouldn’t you be able to upgrade if it’s running dot1x? Is this a warning you grabbed from a document or your own?  I have done plenty of 3850s and 9300s that were running 3.6.x to 16.9.x and 16.12.x that are running dot1x.

We have been able to (easily) replicate an event, on 16.12.X, where if a link would continuously flap it would cause switch members 2 and 3 to crash in a round-robin.  The crash also do not leave any crashinfo/crashlog -- New "feature".

If we put the ports into static VLAN assignment, nothing happens.

This tends to affect 3850 more because 3650/3850 have very conservative memory and CPU.  We have been able to crash both 3850 and 9300 very consistently.
TAC Case has been created.

Yes it’s possible. I have done it in every flavor of switch that supports it. There are some automatic conversions it does as well as some recommended ones to run.

create a new rsa token prior to reloading

once the switch stack is up and running you will need to register it to your smart portal.

once registered you will need to run the license convert command on the switch. Validate status by running show commands and forcing a re-auth to see it take.

id also recommend converting device-tracker. There is a command to run once the switch is up and running.
