Hello All,

we replaced GBIC in port GigabitEthernet1/3/21.

The port is now in inactive state. What is the reason the port is inactive ?

GigabitEthernet1/3/21 is up, line protocol is up (inactive)
Hardware is Gigabit Ethernet Port, address is 64f6.9ded.1760 (bia 64f6.9ded.1760)

reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set
Keepalive set (10 sec)
Full-duplex, 1000Mb/s, link type is auto, media type is 1000BaseLH
input flow-control is off, output flow-control is off
ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00
Last input never, output never, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
Input queue: 0/2000/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0
Queueing strategy: fifo
Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)
5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
5 minute output rate 80000 bits/sec, 47 packets/sec

Maybe a bug in the IOS?

can you paste the config ?

Hello,

here is the current configuration of port :

interface GigabitEthernet1/3/21
switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,4,16,55,202,819
switchport mode trunk
storm-control broadcast include multicast
storm-control broadcast level 5.00
storm-control action trap
spanning-tree guard root

Also, we tried to put the interface in default state and then reconfigure it but it didn't help.

Jan

Do you see anything in the logs when you do this?

Hello,

nothing important in the logs.

Here are questions/answers round :

  • could you please confirm that if you remove the transceiver from the port and check the status do you still see it as inactive ?

yes
Mar 9 06:54:51.471 UTC: %C4K_IOSINTF-5-TRANSCEIVERREMOVED: Slot=3 Port=21: Transceiver has been removed
wr#sh int g1/3/21
GigabitEthernet1/3/21 is down, line protocol is down (inactive)

  • remove the GBIC from the port and shut the interface and check the status of the port,it should report admin down as expected and execute no shut command and check again the status of the port.

wr(config)#int g1/3/21
wr(config-if)#shut
wr(config-if)#do sh int g1/3/21
GigabitEthernet1/3/21 is administratively down, line protocol is down (disabled)

wr(config)#int g1/3/21
wr(config-if)#no shut
wr(config-if)#do sh int g1/3/21
GigabitEthernet1/3/21 is down, line protocol is down (inactive)

  • Put the interface in default configuration and execute switchport command followed by the configurations. You can use below script:

wr#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
wr(config)#default int g1/3/21
Interface GigabitEthernet1/3/21 set to default configuration
wr(config)#int g1/3/21
wr(config-if)#switchport
wr(config-if)#switchport mode trunk
wr(config-if)#switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,4,16,55,202,819
wr(config-if)#storm-control broadcast level 5.00
wr(config-if)#storm-control action trap
wr(config-if)#spanning-tree guard root
wr(config-if)#end

GigabitEthernet1/3/21 is down, line protocol is down (inactive)

  • if still the issue not resolved we need to reset the line card manually, as I found one similar case where multiple ports were inactive and case was resolved after reseting the line card.

hw-module module <n> reset where n is slot no.

Now, we must wait for maintenance window when we will reset the module......

Is this the only port in this module saying inactive or there is more?

Yes, only one port saying inactive.
