WS-X6148A-GE-45AF  and   WS-X6148-GE-45AF - What is the difference?

Note one has the "A" after the 6148. Functionally what is the difference if any or can I swap one for the other?

Alphonse

I found some differences in table 5 of the following document:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps708/product_data_sheet0900aecd8017376e.html

in Terms of Jumbo Frame Support and QoS Queues and Buffer Sizes.

Hi Alphonse,

WS-X6148-GE-45AF is an oversubscribed line card with one controller per 8 ports. It has lesser buffer per port and supports lesser number of threshold values for egress queues.

On the other hand WS-X6148A-GE-45AF is more powerful with no oversubscription, larger buffer per port and more threshold values support for egress queues.

WS-X6148-GE-45AF

=================

  • Supports up to 1518 bytes per frame
  • Tx-1p2q2t (per 8 ports), Rx-1p2t (per port) queueing structure
  • Buffer size is 1.4 MB per 8 ports

WS-X6148A-GE-45AF

=================

  • Supports up to 9216 bytes per frame
  • Tx-1p3q8t, Rx-1q2t queuing structure
  • Buffer size is 5.5 MB per port

There will not be any problems if you replace WS-X6148-GE-45AF with a WS-X6148A-GE-45AF if you do not intend to use jumbo frames. However if you do vice versa, there can be some problems if you intend to utilize all the ports on the line card heavily. Also, there can be some incompatibilty if you have QoS configured on the card.

Hope that helps,

Shashank

Hi,

I saw already Shashank has given the major differnces between the two types of module. There are also serveral network management enhancements done on the 6148A module to increase the overall operation efficiency. TDR ( time domain reflectrometery ) is being one of them to troubleshoot the port connectivity issues over the copper cable.
