Cisco SX20 - Video quality

Here’s the situation:

  • •1) Singapore SX20 call to UK SX20 (vice versa) – Good quality on both units
  • •2) China SX20 call to UK SX20 (vice versa) – Good quality on both units
  • •3) Singapore SX20 call to China SX20 (vice versa) – Good quality on SG unit but poor pixelated quality on the China unit.

Initially I thought it to be something to do with the internet line, but it turns out not to be as calls from China to UK are excellent.

Same results even after connecting the unit directly to the router. Any advice to the possible problem?

Hi Jian,

Quality on the SX, MX, EX, & C-series endpoints will be affected by the following configuration items.

- Premium resolution key (enables higher frame rates and resolutions)

- Bandwidth (default call rate, negotiated channel rate based on max rate, etc)

- Motion or sharpness setting on the input source

- Optimal Definition Profile (Normal, Medium, or High) Page 41 of

- Quality of Network (minimal packet loss, latency, etc)

With the failed call test scenario, I would log in to the CLI of the China SX20 and type xstatus Diagnostics. It will look like this:

You will see a channel for Audio, Video and Presentation for Incoming and outgoing data. The statistics will tell you where there are issues with packet loss, drops, or latency/Jitter.

I would expect that you will see some issues on the IncomingVideoChannel and you should be able to tell that it is a network issue based on these statistics.

A few more questions that would be valuable to have the answers too:

What is the call flow? Example: SX20 -> VCSC -> SX20

What are the bandwidth negociations with each test call? Does it change?

Does this happen on only one China SX20 or all of the China endpoints?

Then you will need to take captures on the network to pin point the issue.
