Codec Pro RoomOS 11.5 to 11.20

Hi there,

I am trying to upgrade Codec Pros that are currently on RoomOS 11.5.3.3 to RoomOS 11.20.  I know the new OS uses the SHA512 file type versus the SGN file type; however, I cannot upgrade to the 11.20 directly from 11.5 (I am using the device web GUI to do this).  What are my options to upgrade?  Do I need to downgrade to the 10.19 StepUg first then move up to 11.20?  I cannot find documentation on this particular one - I've seen discussions for if I were running anything RoomOS 10.X and below but not 11.5.

Thank you very much,

Kiley

On the RoomOS side you don’t need to downgrade — the “step upgrade” path only applied to older 10.x devices that couldn’t handle the SHA-512 package format directly. From 11.5.x you can move forward, but not in one hop to 11.20. The devices have to pass through an intermediate 11.x release that supports both .sgn and .sha512 images.

The usual path is:

  • Upgrade from 11.5.3.3 to a mid-train build like 11.10 or 11.11, which still accepts .sgn.

  • Once on that release, you can then upload the .sha512 image for 11.20 via the web UI or TMS.

So: no need to downgrade to 10.19, just step through a later 11.x build that bridges the signing change. After that, you can land on 11.20.

I experienced the same problem upgrading a few Cisco Webex CODEC Pro with SW 11.5 to the latest version 11.27. After several failed attempts to upgrade to SW version 11.27, the CODEC seemed to get the image however, would go right back to 11.5.  Finally, I opened a TAC case and the Cisco representative had me SSH admin@x.x.x.x. to each CODEC to apply in the command line "xCommand SystemUnit SoftwareUpgrade URL: http://binaries.webex.com/collaboration-endpoint-ce-production-stable/20250204110034/zenith.pkg" This command would then upload SW 11.25 to each CODEC from a Cisco web site. After uploading version 11.25 then you could upgrade ach CODEC as you would normally do by browsing to the CODEC and upload the latest SW version 11.27 from a laptop. I hope this helps.

The Step Upgrade file is only required for upgrading endpoints that are running much earlier versions (pre 10.19) of the software that either a) didn't support files over 1Gb, or b) didn't support the newer SHA512 files.   If you're already on RoomOS 11, then you don't need to use the Step Upgrade.    You should be find just upgrading to a recent software version.

In saying that, I have had the odd codec or two which wouldn't upgrade (even though others would using the same file).   In these cases, I tried the file for a version or two prior, and this seemed to help on those problematic devices, which I was then able to update to the most recent version following this intermediate step.
