Cisco Expressway pair question on H.323

Hi,

          A standalone H.323 with private ip address requires a NAT public ip address configured on the endpoint in order to make call with external h.323 endpoints.

         A cisco webex room kit plus sip registers to expressway-c and h323 call mode is configured as direct mode rather than gatekeeper mode.

         Question1: When making a h323 ip call from the room kit plus to another h323 endpoint which is on the internet, does       the h323 signaling pass through expressway-c and expressway-e?

         Question2: If the h323 ip call pass through expressway pair, does NAT ip address require to be configured on room kit plus?

          Question3: If the h323 ip call signaling doesn't pass through expressway pair, then how the "handling unknown ip call" features work on expressway-c and expressway-e?

Thanks!

Hello Danny,

Yes, if you are doing dual registration it will consume 2 licenses for each device.

Please see the admin guide-

So for dual registration you need to purchase more licenses.

But if you have h323-SIP interop key on expressway-C then you don't need more room licenses, as you can dial IP and your expressway will do interop for you and it can route the call with unknown IP.

Thanks.

Hello Danny,

You can register a endpoint with SIP and H323 with expressway at same time.
And below is the answer of your questions-

Question1: When making a h323 ip call from the room kit plus to another h323 endpoint which is on the internet, does the h323 signaling pass through expressway-c and expressway-e?

Answer : No, as you have set the Direct mode so call will directly go out from endpoint and you need to configure the NAT and below ports need to open on firewall
+++++++++
Gatekeeper Discovery (RAS) - Port 1719 - UDP
Q.931 call Setup - Port 1720 - TCP
H.245 - Port Range 5555-5574 - TCP
Video - Port Range 2326-2485 - UDP
Audio - Port Range 2326-2485 - UDP
Data/FECC - Port Range - 2326-2485 - UDP
+++++++++++

Question2: If the h323 ip call pass through expressway pair, does NAT ip address require to be configured on room kit plus?

Answer: No, as mentioned above it will not pass through expressway if the mode is set to Direct.
If you have registered the endpoint on expressway with H323 then only expressway will come in call path and in that case media path will be as below-
H323 endpoint---> Exp-C--Exp-E--->Far end endpoint.

Question3: If the h323 ip call signaling doesn't pass through expressway pair, then how the "handling unknown ip call" features work on expressway-c and expressway-e?

Answer: For handling unknown ip call feature you need to register endpoint to expressway and in that case expressway will route the call outside.

Thanks.

Thank you very much Anurag.

     Our customer purchased 7 set of Cisco WebEx room kit plus and 7 TP room licenses for registering 7 sets of room kit plus on exp-C

If dual-register room kit plus on exp-C, how does exp-C count the registration license? Bases on registered devices or registered aliases? If dual-register all WebEx room kit plus , there will be 3 alias on exp-C for each room kit plus.

1) SIP URI

2) E164

3) H323 URI.

If exp-c counts the registration license bases on registered alias, then obviously, 7 TP room licenses are not enough in this case.

Thanks!
