CUVA Upgrade Path

Hi All,

We have an exec who on occasion wants to videoconference from his laptop while on the road. We've done some testing with IP Communicator 8.6.2, CUVA 2.2.2.0 and VT Camera II over a software VPN (cisco vpn client 5.0). This works reasonably well but resolution is pretty awful. We would like to purchase a new camera &/or software to improve the quality. So I start looking and find that CUVA is now end-of-life, everyone is supposed to move to Jabber. But, Jabber apparently requires we install a telepresence server?

While Jabber seems like an impressive initiative, we are not currently interested in presence, IM, visual voicemail, or any of the other features beyond laptop video-conferencing.

What is my simplest path forward to provide this user with higher quality videoconferencing? Our current videoconferencing infrastructure includes TMS, a VCS, and an MCU, if that helps.

This could easily turn into an hour-long design conversation. The products will continue to evolve/merge on this topic. You would be best served to have a more in-depth conversation with your Cisco AM and Cisco partner.

To answer your immediate question:

Based on the equipment you already have you could just use the Jabber Video client and register it to VCS (and VCS-Expressway if you have it). This provides a high-quality video conferencing experience without the unified client experience. Jabber Video is a separate client than Jabber for Windows/Mac/iOS/Android and used to be called Movi. The one wildcard at the time of this response is Jabber for iPad which also supports registration to VCS.

Thanks. This looks like it will be the ticket, once I figure out how to configure VCS and TMS so the Jabber Video client can register. Working through the documentation now.
