The authentication isn't for the default "admin" user - it's for any users who can be discovered by the LDAP configuration you have set up (see the UserManagement settings section of the Admin Guide).
By enabling HTTPS client certificate verification (NetworkServices HTTPS VerifyClientCertificate), the system will ask the user for a client certificate when they attempt to access the login page of the codec. CA certificate is required and must be uploaded to the codec. The client certificate is used automatically to verify the LDAP user when LDAP authentication is utilised.
