SX20 Presentation fails

Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered the problem I am facing.  I have an SX20 with dual display and would like to use a Mac mini for presentations through the DVI input.  I also have a 1x3 HDMI splitter with the input being the Mac mini (mini display to HDMI) and two of the outputs going to two TVs and the third going to the SX20 via an HDMI to DVI cable.  When all of the devices are connected the Mac mini will show on the TV's HDMI inputs but when a presentation is initiated on the SX20 I get the message that there is no PC source.  I have tried swapping cables and using different spitters from different makers with the same results.  I also tried different output configurations of the switcher in connecting the TVs and SX20. At times the Mac would display on the SX20 for a few seconds then disapper for a few, other times it didnt show at all. I tried adjuting the output resolution on the Mac but with no success. I finally disconnected the outputs from the splitter to the TVs and just had the output to the SX20. Doing this resulted in the icon and message for a new presentation soure being connected appearing.  When the presentaion was initaed there was just a black sreeen.  It appears as if the EDID information is not being passed when using the splitter.  When the Mac is conneted directly to the SX20 everything is fine and the in the display settings of the Mac it shows that it is connected to the SX20.

Any thoughts?

Hi William,

Looks like an compatibity issue with splitter.

Have you tried using different splitter or instead of MAC, trying using windows machine? (just to isolate the issue)

Regards,
Sagar

Thank you for the suggestion. I was able to try using a different splitter even one from a different manufacturer but had no success. I also have a similar setup using an SX20 and a 1x2 splitter and it works fine. The 1x2 and 1x3 are from the same manufacturer and are the same except for the number of outputs.  I have also tried using a windows machine and after adjusting the output resolution I was able to get it working successfully.

I thought i would give an update.  When I set the MAC to 1024x768 and connect it diretly to the codec the Mac shows correclty and  the log displays the following:

Perhaps the splitter does not send EDID? Can you check all.log and look for the EDID events when it is working without the splitter and then add the splitter again ?

A hex EDID looks like below. We can decode the hex data using a tool to check the timings the device is proposing.

I got a bit confused with EDID and HDMI where we are connecting to a monitor. The latter sends EDID information to the codec, so it can select which timing it will use which is understood by the monitor. Here we have the reverse. The DVI is input to the codec. The working resolution is :

May  1 09:47:36 a8 appl: 2332.18 VIDSRCCTRL-0 I: DVI format change vidIo event - 1024x768@60Hz

When the splitter is used, the resolution changes to :

May  1 10:07:01 a8 appl: 3497.04 VIDSRCCTRL-0 I: DVI format change vidIo event - 1920x1080@60Hz

But this is followed by :

May  1 10:07:02 a8 appl: 3498.19 VIDEOLC-0 I: Received SourceFormatEvent from video link 0 (1920x1080@60, digital, ok) in ready state

May  1 10:07:02 a8 appl: 3498.97 VIDSRCCTRL-0 I: DVI format change vidIo event - 0x0@0Hz

May  1 10:07:02 a8 appl: 3498.97 VIDEOLC-0 I: VLC_readySignalSourceEvent port:DVI-I 2: no signal

May  1 10:07:02 a8 appl: 3498.98 VIDSRCCTRL-0 I: DVI format change vpss msg - 0x0@0Hz

May  1 10:07:02 a8 appl: 3498.98 VIDSRCCTRL-0 I: Send format change event from DVI to requester - 0x0@0Hz

So I assume here we send out EDID out to the MAC/Splitter so we can tell it which timings we support.

We do support following resolutions :

SX20_inputs_resolutions.png

So 1920x1080 is on the list!

Once decided on this resolution, the SX20 says it lost video input signal.

If you have root access to the SX20 you can get more status on the DVI using this command :

v4l2-ctl -d1 --log-status

Maybe we can check the output of that command when it is working and not working to get more details.

Danny.

Here is the output of the status log when the Mac is connected directly to the SX20:

Hello,

Cannot see much more we can do at this point. Splitter and codec seems to be incompatible. Maybe we can ask BU whether they are aware of any incompatibilities between SX20 and your splitter. Do you have the brand/model/details of the splitter you use? I can bring it up on our weekly BU meeting then.

Thanks for you help.  The splitter is a Gefen EXT-HDMI1.3-143.  I'm note sure if this helps any but the 1x2 version of this splitter works fine.

Hello,

some details of your Gefen device can be found at this link

Showed this to engineering and they noticed the 'EDID' button on the splitter.

They suggest to test the 1-to-3 splitter with only the SX20 connected and let the SX20 send out its EDID data so it can be picked up by the splitter without connecting the other 2 outputs. Does that work?

What can be done via this EDID button?

Hi,

I have tried connecting the SX20 to output 1 without connecting anything to outputs 2 and 3 but it doesn't work.  The link light on the splitter will light for a moment and the SX20 will indicate that a new presentation source is detected then it will will go away and the link light on the splitter will turn off.  The EDID button allows the splitter to use either an internal generic EDID or an external EDID provided by the display.  The generic EDID is supposed to be compatible with most A/V displays. I have tried using the both the internal and external EDID settings but neither worked.

Hello,

I thought I would post another update.  I tried swapping what is the camera and presentation inputs.  The camera I connected to the DVI input through an HDMI to DVI adapter, the Mac I connected to the HDMI input of the SX20 and I adjusted the video source assignments.  When the Mac connects directly to the HDMI input the Mac's screen is seen and in the display properties shows "SX20" as the connected device.  When the Mac's output is connected to the splitter only a black screen is shown.  Below are the log results of when the Mac was connected directly and when through the splitter.

Directly-working.

Hey there Danny,

Do these commands work with C-series codecs too, or are they special to the SX-series?  I got an error trying to run

v4l2-ctl -d0 --log-status on a C60.

Got a customer who is trying to track down an issue with various sources on a HDMI router.  If the router is plugged into the DVI input all the sources are steady.  If plugged into the HDMI 2 input, some sources are ok, some have either flashing video or no video at all.  I want to make sure they aren't running into a HDCP flag.

Thanks!

Hi Bob
