Telepresnce MX700 HDCP Compliance

Is this device HDCP compliant and, if so, what HDCP version? I have a DirecTV box that is only displaying SD video and distorted audio. Waiting to switch out the AV transmit/receive extenders, as that could be the issue.

All TelePresence endpoints are HDCP compliant, where if you try to send HDCP protected video over video conference or even try to display it locally, you'll be presented with a black screen.  You're probably only getting SD video because that is the only video source that the codec will accept, as it can't accept the HD video due to HDCP.

I thought that if it is compliant that means it should be able to display HDCP signals... That said, is the DVI input on the MX700 able to accept an HD DirecTV signal?

No, HDCP compliant means that it complies with the requirement of preventing non-licensed devices from receiving the signal.

This goes way back to the C90, where Cisco had a choice; allow the codec to pass HDCP content /if/when it was not connected in a videoconference, and used to display content locally, and disallow this once the system was in a videoconference.

Cisco decided, and rightly so in my opinion, that allowing content under certain circumstances and disallowing the same content under other circumstances, would be too confusing for the end-user, so they decided to disallow it regardless of the circumstances in which the system was being used.

There are ways around this though, you can add an additional device between the DirecTV box and the MX700 that will trick it all in to working.  There are a number of articles on the interwebs about doing this (not necessarily for a TelePresence endpoint, but older display devices.  Here's one example: how-hdcp-breaks-your-hdtv-and-how-to-fix-it
