Webex's Participate Bandwith Requirements Using Webcam vs. Profile Pic

For Webex's meeting participants, would the participant's profile pic require the same bandwidth requirements if the participate used a video?  Why or Why not?  I am trying to understand if the bandwidth is really reduced if participants turn off video, but still has a profile pic that may require bandwidth.  Is there a significant difference in bandwidth requirements?

Hi,

Yes, there is significant difference in bandwidth requirement when video is turned ON and OFF. Each active thumbnail (profile picture) takes approximately 60-100 kb/s of bandwidth. If participant turns on video, depending on resolution it requires more bandwidth.

Layer

Bandwidth Range

90p active thumbnail (each)

~60-100 kb/s

180p main video

125-200 kb/s

360p main video

470-640 kb/s

720p main video

900k-1.5 mb/s

Content sharing (sharpness, 1080p/5)

120k – 1.3 mb/s

Content sharing (motion, 720p/30)

900k – 2.5 mb/s

Please refer to below white paper which has more details. Specifically refer to Table 1, 2, 3 and 4 which will provide more details to your question.

The profile pic is a static image it’s not using as much bandwidth vs a live video call, if that’s what you’re asking. You may be able to see this in help menu and see your audio and video stats https://help.webex.com/en-us/nmghd9e/Check-the-Audio-and-Video-Statistics-of-Your-Cisco-Webex-Meeting When sending video vs not sending video. Turning off video will display their profile picture or avatar and will save bandwidth allowing for audio only as an option.
