Public IP addresses are routable on the internet. They are assigned by Internet Service Providers and can be used to reach devices across the internet.
On the other end, Private IP addresses (RFC1918 ; such as 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, 192.168.0.0/16) are routable within the local network but not on the public internet.
