Traditional storage systems are limited in their ability to easily and cost-effectively scale to support massive amounts of unstructured data. With about 80 percent of data being unstructured, new approaches using x86 servers are proving to be more cost effective, providing storage that can be expanded as easily as your data grows. Software Defined Storage is a scalable and cost-effective approach for handling massive amounts of data.

Building enterprise-ready solutions for Software Defined Storage like Cisco Validated Designs helps customers building up that solution in their data center. But expanding a growing Software Defined Storage solution is another important aspect. UCS Director can simplify the expansion with a workflow, adding more capacity or functionality.

Based on the current Cisco Validated Design for Cisco UCS S3260 Storage Server and Red Hat Ceph Storage Cisco UCS S3260 Storage Server with Red Hat Ceph Storage - Cisco and the Performance White Paper based on the CVD Cisco UCS S3260 Storage Server and Red Hat Ceph Storage Performance - Cisco the current workflow shows an example, how to expand your running Ceph cluster with more capacity/OSDs.

The workflow contains four basic tasks:

  1. Create and associate a S-Series chassis profile -> Powershell Task as this is currently not implemented in UCSD 6.0
  2. Create and associate a Service profile -> UCS Task
  3. Setup PXE installation -> Network Service Task (including all OS pre-requisites for Ceph)
  4. Join Ceph cluster -> SSH Command Task

The .zip file contains four files:

  • Workflow .wfdx
  • Powershell script .ps1
  • Kickstart .cfg
  • PXE .cfg

The workflow can be easily enhanced by adding loops for multiple new blades or adding RGW hosts for S3 connectivity. In addition you can also change it for the use of other SDS software like Scality Ring, IBM COS, or SwiftStack.
