Trunk between CUCM 7.1.5 and CUCM 8

Frank Perkins

Hello,

I am fairly new to CUCM, having only used it for a few months. My first deployment, a CUCM 7.1.5 with Unity, was done in only a few days as it urgently needed to go into production and it is not until now, that we have a secondary CUCM (version 8, for a new office) that I have been able to start discovering the system.

I have the following question, and would like to see if anybody can point me in the right direction.

As mentioned, I have a CUCM (7.1.5) connected to a Cisco 2921 with an E1 card which is working fine. At the other site, I have a CUCM (8.5) also with a 2921 with a BRI card, which can also place and receive calls.

Without clustering the devices, or setting up a gatekeeper, I would like to create a trunk between both CUCM's. My numbering policy (for clarity) is the following:

CUCM7.1.5. with DN's between 2000 - 2100

CUCM8.5  with DNs between 3000-3050

First of all, I would like to be able to route calls "internally" via a VPN that exists between both CUCM's. If user with DN 2100 wants to call DN 3001 he may place the call just by dialling 3001, and we would route those calls over the trunk to the remote CUCM and DN 3001 would ring. And the same for users with DNs 3000-3050, they would be able to call "internally" to the other CUCM also.

I have read thru the documentation, and tried setting up an Inter-Cluster trunk with no Gatekeeper control (as both CUCMs are standalone) but I have the following issues:

- While I have the correct (I think) CSSs assigned and I am routing 3XXX calls over the trunk which I have created, they do not seem to arrive to "the other side". The route pattern is working, because if I change 3XXX to route over PSTN I get an error, but I see that the calls are at least trying to go over the PSTN link.

- I have tried using the RTM log viewer as I would like to be able to see if the trunk is "seeing" both CUCMs and diagnose any issues with incorrect trunk configuration.

So to sum it up my questions are the following:

- How do I properly set up a trunk between two CUCMS without using a gatekeeper so I can route calls between them?

- What tools do I use to diagnose trunking issues?

Any assistance is appreciated.

Hi Frank,

You are on the right track by using a new ICT

A great tool for diagnosing these issues is the DNA (Dialed Number Analyzer) Tool;

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/dna/7_0_1/bw-dna.html

Cheers!

Rob

Thanks for the tip using the DNA Rob, I will definately try it out soon!

Once I set up an ICT w/o Gatekeeper on each CUCM are there any things I should keep an eye on? Although probably unrelated, I have noticed that on one CUCM it keeps on throwing out 503 errors when trying to connect SIP clients to it.

I am going to also take another look at the CUCM itself to see if there are any other errors that may be affecting the setup of an ICT.
