Trying to upgrade my customer demonstration system and am running into an error during Unity setup. Even though it's used for demos, this system is pretty ordinary in terms of setup. I had no trouble running the 4.0(2), and 4.0(4)SR1 upgrades and I don't believe anything has changed since then.
The error occurs at the end of the setup when the configuration scripts start, but right near the beginning (0%). I get the "Setup was unable to configure default settings on your system" message. I attached two files from \CommServer\logs that seem to get updated just as it happens, and there is an exception caught in the diag, but I can't figure out why. The stream files dir is already present, hmm..

Just noticed the ExchangeIS service needed to be kicked for some reason, Ex System Manager couldn't connect to it, going to try again.

Still didn't work. Would love to hear any ideas. I am going to back off Unity and reinstall from the ground up (gotta go figure out how to do that), but would love to understand what is happening here.

Hi -
Did you get a clean DBWalker run on the 4.0(4)SR1 system before upgrading? Did you use the unityinstall account to perform the upgrade (the same one that installed 4.0(4))? As part of the upgrade process, the previous Unity installation is removed, which sounds like it did not complete on your lab system. This could be the reason the stream files directory already existed. Any chance you upgraded Exchange in your lab to 2003 SP1 and did not rerun the permissions wizard prior to the upgrade? These are a few things I thought of, although not sure if it helps since you already did a rebuild. We did not encounter any problems in the lab upgrading a 4.0(4) SR1 UM demo system to 4.0(5) integrated with Exchange 2003 SP1. Other things I did was to run Syscheck just to ensure permissions were good before upgrading and I also broke the mirror set in the lab.
