Unity Connection 7.1(5) on DL380-G5

Hi There,

A customer of mine is running Unity Connection 7.1(5) on HP DL380-G6. They have decicded to downgrade the hardware to HP DL380-G5. I did a fresh build on the DL380-G5, with the same name, IP address and exactly the same os version as current server (DL380-G6). Then I ran backup on DL380-G6 and restored the backup on DL380-G5. This all went smoothly but the new Unity Connection (DL380-G5) does not accept any calls / voicemails. When calls divert to voice mail, the call gets disconnected straight away.   I checked the VM ports on the CUCM and all ports are registered.

I tried the new G5 server without restoring first and I get the same result. The syslog message I get on Unity Connection server is "Cannot play greeting".

Has anyone come across this please and what was the solution?

Thank  you

Hi -

My first thought on this would be to verify in Unity Connection "Check Telephony Configuration" and also to review your Port Group and ports on CUC to confirm the ports are enabled/configured for Answer.  Also review your licensing to make sure something did not get messed up there.

Sincerely, Ginger

My first guess, unless you just didn't mention the licensing portion of this downgrade, would be just that...Licensing:

License Files and MAC Addresses

Each license file (except for the demonstration license file) is  registered to the MAC address of the network interface card (NIC) on the  Cisco Unity Connection server. The license file for one server cannot  be used on a second server (for example, because you want to replace the  Connection server). You must obtain a replacement license file that is  registered to the MAC address on the second server.

The license file can be registered to only one MAC address. If the  Connection server has a dual NIC, you must either configure it for  network fault tolerance, which assigns one MAC address to both NICs, or  disable one of the NICs and use the MAC address for the other NIC.

When you order a license file for a dual NIC that has been configured  for network fault tolerance, specify the virtual MAC address that  applies to both NICs rather than the physical MAC address for either of  the NICs. The license file is registered to the virtual MAC address, so  the license will continue to be valid even if one of the NICs fails.

You'll need to contact licensing@cisco.com (or TAC, I suppose) and request a new license.  You should be able to get a temporary license that will get the system up and running until the permanent license is issued.

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply. I have correct licenses loaded and there are no licensing errors.  I compared the features between the existing (Dl380-G6) and the new Server  (DL380-G5) and they all are the same.

Also checked all the Telephony parameters, ports, port groups and once again compared with the working system and are all the same.

Out of curiousity, what is the IP address assigned to the ports when you view the registered/unregistered status in CUCM?

The "IP address" field shows the IP address of the Voicemail

Server and the Registered to IP address is of the CUCM. And this compares with the working system.

Ok, may sound like a "dumb" question but I have installed CUC before and had issues only to see that the ports registered with APIPA address (private IP) such as 169.254.x.x...in fact, my issues were similar to yours.  In my case, a reboot of the cluster worked fine (i.e., the CUC HA cluster).

Hi Hailey,

The Ports are registered to correct IP addresses. In your case, was the phaltform DL380-G5? I am wondering in 7.1 is supported on G5s???

Take a look here:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/voicesw/ps6789/ps5745/ps6509/data_sheet_c78-491743.html

Looks to be a couple processor options but this will tell you if you're supported.  Generally, this is something you should check before making any hardware changes.  However, I would encourage you to open a TAC case (if licenses are intact) as that will likely be of more value to you in this scenario.

Hi Hailey,

Thank you for your help.

I rebuilt the server and it worked but as soon as I restored it with the data from the current prod (G6) server it stopped working? I think I will log a call with TAC.
