CUPS 8.6 and Lync Intradomain Federation - using Email address

My CUPS domain and Lync domain are the same eg. cisco.com

The problem is in CUPS I'm not using sAMAccountName I'm using employeeNumber to sync with LDAP for various reasons. So my CUPS SIP URI is 5847@cisco.com. Whereas my email address is firstname.lastname@cisco.com

We can exchange presence and IM fine between the Lync and CUPS enviroment using 5847@cisco.com but even with this checkbox enabled "Enable Use of Email address when federating" the Lync user sends a IM to me using firstname.lastname@cisco.com I receive the SIP request on the server but looking at the logs it seems that my presence server doesn't know what to do with it, it seems like it is not matching up my SIP URI to my email address. In the logs it comes back with a 404 error. On the CUPC client I don't get anything.

Any ideas?
