Difference between Voice Gateway & Trunk, and When should i use them?

Hello everyone

I'm sorry if my question was so poor. I'm quite new to these voices technology. So I need an exact understanding about this. What is the difference between trunk and a gateway (voice gateway)? when should I use them?

My topology is :

PSTN ======= VG (FXO) ====== Layer 3 Switch ======= CUCM

(0352)488xxx                                  III            III

                                                 IP Phone    IP Phone

                                                 (10001)      (10002)

When i want to make an inbound call from outside to my DN 10001, or vice versa (my DN make an outbound call to outside), which one should i use? trunk? or gateway? or maybe both?

Thanks for the answer

Basically the same thing, depending which call control protocol you want to use. H.323 or MGCP are configured as a gateway in CUCM while SIP is configured as a trunk.

There is a lot of personal opinion of which protocol is best. I use SIP for everything but that isn’t a universal belief.
