ISR 4331 - Not Enough Resources

Hi Expert,

Router: ISR 4331

IOS: isr4300-universalk9.16.06.04.SPA.bin and isr4300-universalk9.03.16.04b.S.155-3.S4b-ext.SPA.bin

I am configuring E1 controller and I got this error:

ROUTER(config)#controller E1 0/1/0
ROUTER(config-controller)#pri-group timeslots 1-31 service mgcp
% Not enough DSP resources available to configure pri-group on controller E1 0/1/0
% The remaining dsp resources are enough for 0 time slots.

These are from my inventory:

There's no channels allocated yet but why am I getting below. I have not configured any transcoder nor conference resources yet.

"The remaining dsp resources are enough for 0 time slots."

Tried to use the DSP calculator and need to increase our DSP but I need to understand first why we are getting above error. Also, since we already have PVDM4-64, instead of adding PVDM4-128, can we add PVDM4-64?

DSP Module Allocation:
  NIM 0: PVDM4-128

Call Volume Allocation:
  Low Med High
  NIM 0: NIM-2MFT-T1/E1(E1) 50 5 5

Transcoding Low Comp: 5
Conference 8 Party G.711: 4

Thanks in advance!

Re: ISR 4331 - Not Enough Resources

The motherboard PVDMs are supported on all Cisco 4000 Series ISRs. They can be plugged directly into the single slot on the router motherboard or into the network interface module (NIM) that supports T1/E1 ports. A PVDM4 module plugged into the motherboard delivers IP-based voice services such as conferencing, media optimization, and transcoding only.

A PVDM4 module plugged into the T1/E1 NIM would be used for voice T1/E1 connectivity. Any excess channels can be reused toward other IP-based services supported on the motherboard slot. Enhanced DSP architecture accommodates a new packet-processing engine optimized for rich-media voice applications, while concurrently supporting the TDM-IP voice framework.

The PVDM enhanced services modules are supported on ISRs that contain an SM-X slot - namely the Cisco 4331, 4351, and 4451 ISRs. The SM-X modules support only IP-based voice services and cannot be used for TDM applications.

Re: ISR 4331 - Not Enough Resources

Is the PVDM on the NIM or MB?

Hi Java,

It is in MB.

Re: ISR 4331 - Not Enough Resources

Thanks Java! This is very helpful!

Just to confirm my understanding. Since this is an on board PVDM, we cannot use this for T1/E1 connectivity. This can only be used for conferencing, media optimization, and transcoding only. So if we need for T1/E1 connectivity, we need to have an additional PVDM that is plugged in into NIM.

Re: ISR 4331 - Not Enough Resources

It would be up to you and your sizing for resources, either you move the PVDM to the NIM or buy another one for the NIM. Your choice.
