Hi Amit,

There are plenty of things you need to review before going ahead with a major migration such as this.

Not sure what the full version of CM 7.1 you are using, but I would suggest going through the following links for this question:

Supported Servers for Releases of Cisco Unified Communications Manager

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/voicesw/ps6790/ps5748/ps378/prod_brochure0900aecd8062a4f9.html

For MCS-7816-I4:

Minimum Memory Requirement is 2GB. For version 8.0(3) through 8.5, 4 GB strongly recommended, required for 8.6(1)+

Minimum Disk Requirement is 160GB.

Unified Communications in a Virtualized Environment

http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Unified_Communications_in_a_Virtualized_Environment

Please go through the above link thoroughly. It covers most questions you would have regarding the virtualized portion of it.

Upgrading to Unified CM 9.1(1)

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/rel_notes/9_1_1/CUCM_BK_R6F8DBD4_00_release-notes-for-cucm-91_chapter_01.html

This is the release notes for CM 9.1. It covers the upgrade processes you can follow.

Cisco Unified Communications Manager Software Compatibility Matrix

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/compat/ccmcompmatr1.pdf

This doc tells you if you can directly upgrade to the version you want.

As for phone firmware, you could either let the phones upgrade to the bundled firmware. If you do not wish to do so, then download the current firmware version from CCO and upload those to the CUCM servers, so that they dont upgrade after the migration. Here is a firmware upgrade matrix for the model you are using:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/7960g_7940g/mgcp/firmware/matrix/frmwrup.html

In order to get the licenses, you can do a "show version" on the Publisher CLI and provide the MAC address given in that output for licensing.

For compatibility information between Cisco Unified Communications Manager and Cisco Unity Connection, consult the following documents:

SCCP Compatibility Matrix: Cisco Unity Connection, Cisco Unified Communications Manager, and

Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express

SIP Trunk Compatibility Matrix: Cisco Unity Connection, Cisco Unified Communications

Manager, and Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express

Find these documents at this URL:

HTH. Good luck with the migration :-)

Harmit,

One more concern regarding your provided link,

Supported Servers for Releases of Cisco Unified Communications Manager

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/voicesw/ps6790/ps5748/ps378/prod_brochure0900aecd8062a4f9

as per the describe a table in the given link MCS 7816I4 is no more support for CUCM v9.1

see my HW for MCS server as below in the current setup

Active Master Version: 7.1.3.32900-4

HW Platform       : 7816I4

Processors        : 1

Type              : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     E8400  @ 3.00GHz

CPU Speed         : 3000

Memory            : 2048 MBytes

Object ID         : 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.898

OS Version        : UCOS 4.0.0.0-31

is this above MCS server and configuration will support for CUCM v9.1?

if no then how will i proceed for the migrate existing setup of CUCM v9.1 as VMware on UCS C210 M2 server?

I also required support regarding license, as i am going to migrate a existing CUCM v9.1 as VMware for that from where i can get the MAC address of VMware to get the license done?

I really appreciate your reply

Hi Amit,

In that case, I would suggest to an upgrade to 8.6 on the physical server (you would need to upgrade the RAM to 4 GB and possibly the hard drive as well), take a DRS backup, build the same version on the UCS platform, restore the backup, upgrade to 9.1.

For MCS-7816-I4:

Minimum Memory Requirement is 2GB. For version 8.0(3) through 8.5, 4 GB strongly recommended, required for 8.6(1)+

Minimum Disk Requirement is 160GB.

Regarding licensing queries, kindly refer to the following doc which should ideally clarify any doubts you have:

Thanks for your instant reply.

As per your last mail i just want to confirm that do i need to follow the same procedure in VMware invirement or will i require different process? if NO ,

Then pls guide for the VMware envirement for CUCM v9.1 on UCS C210 M2 server,

Sory to ask you same question again but still i have a same concern that MCS 7816I4 is supporting CUCM v9.1 or not?

If No,

Then till which CUCM version it would support?

Because I have gone through the same guide which you provided in your first reply post that guide link they did not mention about MCS 7816I4 is supporting the CUCM v9.1

Hi Amit,

As I mentioned in my previous post, review the following steps:

1>     Upgrade to 8.5 or 8.6 version on your MCS platform from your current version. Keep in mind the memory and disk requirements for those versions as pointed out earlier. This can be a direct upgrade as per the software compatibility matrix.

2>     Take a DRS backup of the CUCM cluster on the MCS platform.

3>     Do a fresh install of the same version (8.5 or 8.6, whichever you installed on the MCS platform) on the UCS platform.

4>     Do a DRS restore of the CUCM cluster on the UCS platform.

5>     Upgrade to 9.1 on the UCM platform.

Note: If you upgrade to 8.6, you would need to install the refresh_upgrade.cop file first. If you upgrade to 8.5, you wont need it then, but you will need it when you upgrade to 9.1. These details are provided in the install and upgrade guides for these versions at the following location:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps556/prod_installation_guides_list.html

So you see, you wont be installing CUCM 9.1 on the MCS platform using the method above.

Thanks Harmit,

one more concern as per mention in your past mail regarding point number 3.

3>  Do a fresh install of the same version (8.5 or 8.6, whichever you installed on the MCS platform) on the UCS platform.

To do so, will i have to ask for a license of CUCM v8.5 or 8.6(2) becouase hardware and MAC address is going to change ? If NO, then how it will work with diffrent HW/MAC add on UCS server (VMware envirement >?

Hi Amit,

For the interim upgrade to 8.5 / 8.6, you would not require licenses as you would be upgrading to 9.1. The demo licenses would kick in and would allow you to take a backup and restore onto the UCS platform. Once on the UCS platform, you will perform an upgrade to 9.1 where the licensing model has completely changed. Please refer to the FAQ link I provided previously for more details on the licensing part in CUCM 9.x:

Hi Harmit,

I hope that you are doing well.

I am just stuck in one parameter of upgrade unity connection v7.1 to unity connection v9.1.

Will we have any RISK factor after upgrade to v9.1?

Will users existing(old) voicemail and mailbox are going to overwrite or it will be get as it is after upgrade to v9.1?

Please assist on same Or would you be able to provide any links regarding the same.

I appreciate the same harmit.

Hi Amit,

In Unity Connection, the messages are stored in a common partition

and will be preserved during the upgrade process so you should be good

to go

Thanks Rob,

You are very quick to assist.

Do I need to make any changes Or configure in upgrade procedure to get the same while upgrading the node Or it will just preserve bydefault?  Or how it is?

I have gone through the same link which you have provided but I didn't got my answer from it,

Would you be please resend with specific marking or highlighting? If possible I am very appreciate the same.

Hi Amit,

You are most welcome my friend

There is nothing special that needs to be done to preserve messages

during the upgrade procedure. It is inherent.

This section of the doc I linked details the message availability before, during &

after the upgrade;

Status of Connection Features During an Upgrade from Connection 7.x, 8.0, or 8.5 to Connection 9.x

During an upgrade from Connection 7.x, 8.0, or 8.5 to Connection 9.x, if  you do not have a cluster, Connection is completely disabled for the  entire duration of the upgrade.

If you are upgrading a cluster, the upgrade starts on the publisher  server. Connection functionality on the publisher server is completely  disabled for the entire duration of the upgrade. Note the following  about the functionality that is available on the subscriber server while  the publisher server is being upgraded:

If  the phone system is routing calls to the subscriber server, outside  callers and Connection users can leave voice messages, but the messages  are not immediately delivered to user mailboxes.

Connection  users can use the telephone user interface (touchtone conversation ) to  listen to messages that are left before you start the upgrade. However,  users cannot listen to messages that are left during the upgrade, and  Connection will not always retain the status of messages. For example,  if a user plays a voice message during the upgrade, the message may be  marked as new again after the upgrade. If a user deletes a message, the  message may reappear after the upgrade.

Connection  users cannot access Connection using graphical user interfaces, for  example, ViewMail for Outlook, Web Inbox, or IMAP email applications.

If  Connection users use the touchtone conversation to change their user  preferences or other settings during the upgrade, their changes will  probably be lost. (There are brief periods during the upgrade when  changes are saved, but identifying those periods is difficult at best.)

Cisco  Unified Operating System Administration is available, but other  administration user interfaces, for example, Connection Administration  and Cisco Unity Connection Serviceability, are not available. In  addition, custom administration interfaces that were developed by using  the Connection administration API are also not available.

Intrasite  and intersite networking is disabled for the duration of the upgrade.  Directory changes made on other nodes in the network are not replicated  to the server or cluster that you are upgrading until after the upgrade  is complete.

When the upgrade of the publisher server is complete, full functionality is restored on the publisher server.

When you start the upgrade on the subscriber server in a cluster:

Messages  that were left on the subscriber server are copied to the publisher  server, and the publisher server begins to deliver the messages to user  mailboxes.

Connection functionality on the subscriber server is completely disabled for the entire duration of the upgrade.

While the subscriber server is being upgraded, messages that are left on  the publisher server are delivered to user mailboxes on the publisher  server. When the upgrade of the subscriber server is complete, the  messages are replicated to the subscriber server and are delivered to  user mailboxes on the subscriber server. If single inbox is configured,  messages are synchronized to Exchange after they are delivered to user  mailboxes. If a large number of messages were left during the upgrade,  there may be a significant delay before message delivery, replication,  and synchronization with Exchange.

Cheers!

Rob
