NTP in CUCM 6.1

Hi,

I have changed my external NTP servers in CUCM 6.1.1 under Phone NTP reference and then updated the date/time groups with the new NTP servers.

However 48 hours later, when I use the cli it still tells me the old local NTP server is in use and the phones are still referencing this old server as the time is wrong.

I do not see a utils ntp restart option, unlike CUCM 7.X, from the cli and do not know how to get the new NTP servers to show up.

What is required here, a physical reboot of the server. Please let me know.

Regards,

John

Re: NTP in CUCM 6.1

Hello,

Changing any configuration for a time requires a restart for the servers however there is no need to restart the PUB , only the subscribers ...

Re: NTP in CUCM 6.1

Hi Amer,

We only have a single server cluster so I suppose the reboot is the only option.

Thanks for the reply,

Re: NTP in CUCM 6.1

Hello,

It shouldn't but i guess this is your only option , i had never heard of a single server that the time changed on it that needs restart ???? this is really wiered , we usually change the time on the PUB server and then do a normal restart for the subscribers , otherwise the database will be corrupted .

Just one thing , did you try to go to cisco unified reporting and genrate a DB replication status report , is the database in a good state.

Re: NTP in CUCM 6.1

Maybe not relevant to your problem but I noticed something in your post.

"Phone NTP reference" for the phone is totally independent from the "NTP configuration for CUCM".  For example:

1) "Phone NTP reference" could point to A, while "NTP configuration for CUCM" could point to B (or not to have NTP at all).

2) You may use CLI to verify the NTP configuration for CUCM.  But you cannot use CLI to verify the "Phone NTP reference".

Re: NTP in CUCM 6.1

Hi John,

Just one note here You mentioned the "Phone NTP reference" but this setting is only used with

SIP phones.

Can you try this method;

NTP Servers

Ensure that external NTP server is stratum 9 or higher (1-9). To add, delete, or modify an external NTP server, follow this procedure:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note You can only configure the NTP server settings on the first node or publisher.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Procedure

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 1 From the Cisco Unified Communications Operating System Administration window, navigate to Settings>NTP Servers.

The NTP Server Settings window displays.

Step 2 You can add, delete, or modify an NTP server:

To delete an NTP server, check the check box in front of the appropriate server and click Delete.

To add an NTP server, click Add, enter the hostname or IP address, and then click Save.

To modify an NTP server, click the IP address, modify the hostname or IP address, and then click Save.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note Any change you make to the NTP servers can take up to five minutes to complete. Whenever you make any change to the NTP servers, you must refresh the window to display the correct status.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 3 To refresh the NTP Server Settings window and display the correct status, choose Settings>NTP.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note After deleting, modifying, or adding NTP server, you must restart all the other nodes in the cluster for the changes to take affect.

Re: NTP in CUCM 6.1

Thanks to all who replied.

I changed the settings under OS administration and the NTP reference is working correctly.

Kind Regards,

John
