  Is it possible to add a new soft key to a template to dial a designated extension for an operator?

No, you may add a speed dial to do such task.

Or just create a translation pattern and have them dial 0 or something similar and redirect them to the operator.

Thanks for the quick response. We are currently using a translation pattern which is working fine, but we are planning on changing the operator extension and thoufght we might find something easier for the user base to use. Abbreviated dialing would be per user and therefore not easily changed for the masses correct?

Correct, if you want something for everyone and to keep it simple, keep the TP method.
