UC on UCS-C210M2-VCD2 DRAM Question

Folks,

I have a customer looking to swap the DRAM included in the UCS-C210M2-VCD2 bundle from this:

Included: UC-N01-M304GB1

      4GB DDR3-1333MHz RDIMM/PC3-10600/dual rank 1Gb DRAMs

to an 8GB version in order to cut down on the number of DRAm slots taken from 12 to six per server.

The problem is that nowhere can I find such an ability to alter it whether its factory or post shipment.

Can anyone tell me if this is even optionable in UCS C-Series?

Thanks,

Robert

UCS-C210M2-VCD2 is a fixed configuration specifically for use with the "UC on UCS" solution as described at http://www.cisco.com/go/uconucs and http://www.cisco.com/go/uc-virtualized .  If this is for general purpose usage then you should just use the regular "build to order" SKUs.

They are not configurable/optionable in the quote/ordering tools.  You can make changes to it post-install obviously, but if using this for UC on UCS, you must follow the support policy for that solution.

Thank you Jarius for your response.

Is it safe to say that if we could swap out the 4Gb mods for 8 Gb ones that the 4Gb's would become useless?

Also, I could not find a sku and cost representing what an 8Gb version might be?

Any insight you may have I do appreciate.

Thanks,

Robert

I wouldn’t say useless. UCS hardware can be re-purposed for any app not just Cisco apps.

There are also best practices configurations for DIMM quantities on 2-socket servers. If you look at www.cisco.com/go/swonly you can see the list of UCS parts that ship with UCS-C210M2-VCD2, and use the chassis SKU to find the memory choices.

Hi James,

Just by technical curiosity; I am not planning or advising to do it; in term ofperformance having 12*4G or 6*8G should be exactly the same no ?

Each processor have 3 memory channels, we should be able to access max memory and max speed.

Any comment ?

Do what UCS best practices say to do.

For a 2-socket server, DIMM quantities should be multiples of six – I have seen this as “recommended” and “required”, not sure which it is. For our UC on UCS TRCs, we treat as “required”. But us in UC app land are not the authorities. We have learned that our UC apps are not impacted by whether or not you do this.

Hi James

What about if I use Table 9 to order UCS-C210M2-VCD2 based on DC SKUs, can I order 6 - 8GB DRAM instead of 12 - 4GB DRAM? Does it be accepted as a valid TRC configuration?

Thank you,

TRC rules only care about memory quantity. Follow server vendor rules for DIMM population. We try to use the cheapest config that aligns with SAVBU memory population rules at time of TRC creation, but something pricing or rules change after the fact.

This is outlined in the TRC rules here: http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Tested_Reference_Configurations_%28TRC%29#Hardware_Requirements_for_Tested_Reference_Configurations_.28TRCs.29
