Hi,
I totally understand your problem. The issue here is not Unity it is Exchange and indexing.
When you log in and hit #, the AvNotifier makes a MAPI call to the exchange server and then the exchange server indexes then inbox of the subscriber to see if there are any changes. If there are, Exchange then reports back to Unity the changes. So Unity is just waiting. The larger the inbox the longer the wait.
That is not all. If a large inbox subscriber logs on and is indexing first, then another smaller inbox subscriber tries to log on, he will have to wait just as long.
Cisco is working on this issue, however reducing the size of the inboxes is really the only way. ES84 I know was made for this issue, however has issues. I have a TAC case open for ES84.

Enforce mailbox size limits on all subscribers.

Thanks, For the explanation.
Please let me know if you get a resolution.
I too have TAC case open and I am waiting to hear back from our server team. Cisco wants us to run Best Practices utility on Exchange.

and the main one is going to be to recuce the size of the inboxes.
