Dear All,
1> Currently using unity Connection v7.1
2> Planning to upgrade from v7.1 to v9.1
3> I have installed the ELM as standalone server for managing licenses. But yet I have not created any instances for Unity Connection.
Please assist on point given below
1> Will I able to upgrade Unity Connection v9.1 without creating any instances ELM server for unity connection? If NO, then please advise on it.
2> Will I need to first create instances for unity connection? Or Will I need to first upgrade the Unity Connection?
3> What is the best practice?

Hi Amit,
Here we go
1. Yes, the upgrade can be done b4 creating the Product instance
2. The Connection upgrade will be the first step
3. Your method here would adhere to the Best Practice
If you are upgrading from Cisco Unity Connection Surviable Remote Site VoiceMail 7.x or 8.x to Connection 9.x., during the upgrade, the legacy license information of the previous version is uploaded to Connection 9.x database. After the completion of upgrade process, Connection 9.x needs to be configured and synchronized with the ELM server. For more information, refer to the ELM User Guide at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/elmuserguide/9_0_1/CUCM_BK_E596FD72_00_enterprise-license-manager-user-90.html.
Once Connection 9.x is configured with the ELM server, the legacy information is sent to the ELM server. Now, you can migrate licenses through the ELM server. For more information in migrating licenses through the ELM server, refer to the "Migrate licenses using Upgrade Licenses wizard" section of ELM user guide.

Thanks Rob for your quick responce.
One more concern rob, Please advice on given below steps
Plan to upgrade v9.1
Steps:
1> Upgrade Unity connection v7.1 to v9.1
2> After the completion of upgrade process, Connection 9.x needs to be configured and synchronized with the ELM server.
Query:
1> Is abow mention upgrade steps are correct or not?
2> Will we able to connect the unity connection in to production network after the complete upgrade to v9.1?
If Yes, Then for how many days we can able to use it in production network without synchronized with ELM server?
If No, Then how we will process for the same? Or Will we have to synchronized immediately after the upgrade complete to the unity connection v9.1?
Thanks

Hi Amit,
You are most welcome my friend
Once you finish the upgrade to Unity Connection you
must set up the ELM connection/synchronize. You will have a
full 60 days at that point to bring your licensing into "compliance".
When Cisco Unity Connection is connected with the ELM server and the required number of licenses for the features are installed on the ELM server, the license status becomes "Compliance". For example, if the ELM server is configured for 50 users, the Connection server can request for less than equal to 50 users to remain in "Compliance" mode.
If the required number of licenses are not installed on the ELM server, the license status becomes "Violation". However, you can still use the licensed features on Connection for 60 days, which is the grace period. During this grace period, you are required to obtain and install the required number of licenses or reduce the usage of the licensed features in order to avoid license violation. However, if you do not take the required action during the grace period, then license status becomes "Expire".
Once the license status of Cisco Unity Connection software changes to "Expire", the software will stop functioning. The Connection server will not answer any calls to leave or retrieve voicemails. However, you can still add, modify or delete configuration data on the server. You are required to obtain and install the required number of licenses or reduce the usage of the licensed features to avoid license violation. After taking the required action, the license status changes from "Expire" to "Compliance" and you can use the licensed features on Connection again.
Note After obtaining and installing licenses for changing the license status from "Expire" to the "Compliance", you must restart Cisco Unity Connection.
