Hi,

We are using Cisco Business Edition M4 server with Unity which is running ios version 11.5. we have over 150 IP phones configured with it. The CUCM doesn't have redundancy. we have bought another CUCM M6 server with ios version 12.

Please anyone let me know the procedures and guidance if you know for the below actions.

we need to upgrade our existing CUCM M4 running in VM from 11.5 to 12. is there any procedure guide on that?

we need to make M6 server as our publisher and M4 server as our subscriber.

Also, we need to migrate the configuration from M4 server to M6 server.

Could anyone help on this?

Hi Hari,

Please see below comments to your questions:

- To upgrade CUCM and CUC from version 11.5 to 12.5, you need to go through below upgrade guides:
CUCM 12.5 Upgrade Guide:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/upgrade/12_5_1/cucm_b_upgrade-migration-guide-125x.pdf
CUC 12.5 Upgrade Guide:
https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/connection/12x/install_upgrade/guide/b_12xcuciumg.pdf
- All the prerequisites and upgrade tasks are mentioned in this document.
- Go through the CUCM and CUC 12.5 release notes to verify requirements, supported endpoints, limitations etc. In CUCM 12.5, not all older Cisco Endpoints are supported:
CUCM 12.5 Release Notes:
https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/rel_notes/12_5_1/SU1/cucm_b_release-notes-for-cucm-imp-1251su1.pdf
CUC 12.5 Release Notes:
https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/connection/12x/release/notes/b_Release_Notes_1251.html
- Go through the Cisco Collaboration Virtualization site to verify CUCM & CUC 12.5 support on VMware ESXi. CUCM & CUC 12,5 is supported only on VMware ESXi 6.5U2 and 6.7. It is not supported on VMware ESXi 6.0 and earlier version.
https://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/uc_system/virtualization/virtualization-cisco-unified-communications-manager.html

We need to make M6 server as our publisher and M4 server as our subscriber.

In order to make M6 as your Publisher, there are two options:
a. Perform CUCM Cluster migration using Cisco Prime Collaboration Deployment (PCD). Below are some Youtube video URLs for PCD installation and CUCM migration:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMrS0hMES7A
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd7dvvP103E
Also, go through the Cisco PCD Administration Guide.
b. Install new CUCM and Unity Connection Cluster on M6 Server and then perform DRS backup restore. This will bring over configuration from old cluster to new cluster.

We need to migrate the configuration from M4 server to M6 server.

Follow the options mentioned in earlier question.

Mandatory reading for any upgrade

A) Upgrade and migration guide

B}) Release notes

C) Readme/RN from ova

D) Compatibility matrix if there's a separate doc

All you need to perform the upgrade is in the above documentation, thoroughly read it.

FYI, IOS is for ISRs, not for CUCM running on ESXi.

You'll need to use vCenter, DRS, PCD or any other option you choose to move the VMs between servers, either upgrading while doing it with PCD, or just moving the VM and then upgrading.

I am not clear on an update i read the documents , but im bit confused, how to change the virtual hardware machine in vmware from 8 to 13-

Power off Vm , change to 13 , and power on VM?

That procedure itself is not Cisco, it's VMware's, you can find information on upgrading the VM HW/version online, there should even be some videos on that.

Yes you would need to power off the VM, then select upgrade hardware compatible version to the level you need and then power on the VM.
