What are the Required Phone Firmware files (extensions) needed for CUCM / CME for both SCCP and SIP phones

I've gotten a bit confused on what actual file needs to be installed / uploaded with regards to Phone Firmware.  For example for a Cisco 7960 (Both SCCP and SIP requirements):

  • What files are the actual “firmware” files?   I’ve seen .loads, .sbn, .sb2, .bin, somebody was showing a .sebn.  If I remember right I was only able to get SIP phones working in my call manager uploading the cmterm-7940-7960-8.9.00-sip.cop.sgn file.
  • With CME do we need to add file extensions to the CME Configs?  IE in either the voice register or telephony-service sections.

And as a side question if I have a 7960 phone and want to a CUCM as a SCCP phone, then install it as a SIP in either this same CUCM, or another CUCM, or a CME setup can someone point me to a doc or example on steps?

thank you

Hi,

Below are my comments:

1. COP files are used on CUCM whereas the ZIP file or the unzip files with .loads extension is used on CME.

The below guide can be referred for CME:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/voice-unified-communications/unified-communications-manager-express/68244-PhoneLoadUpgradeCCME.html

For firmware installation/upgrade you can refer to the link below:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/voice-unified-communications/unified-ip-phone-7900-series/108090-upgrade-ip-firmware.html

2. If you have to convert the same phone from SCCP to SIP, you need to refer to the link below:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/collaboration-endpoints/unified-ip-phone-7900-series/5455-handset-to-sip.html

Let me know in case you have any questions.
