Can someone please explain, what second-level boot devices are used for ?
In the documentation it says:
For Cisco UCS M3 blade and rack servers in UEFI boot mode, you can select both top-level and
second-level boot devices. For all servers in legacy boot mode, you can only select a top-level device.
Note
Local Disk Boot
If a server has a local drive, you can configure a boot policy to boot the server from the top-level local disk
device or from any of the following second-level devices:
•
Local LUN
SD card
Internal USB
External USB
Does it mean, USB and/or SD are always second level devices ?? and as such require UEFI Boot ?

Hi Wdey,
The main idea is the UCS Manager does not differentiate between the types of local boot devices. If an operating system has been installed on more than one local drive or on an internal USB drive (eUSB), you cannot specify which of these devices the server should use as the boot drive. We will need to set up the "secondary boot order" in the HDD boot option.
From the top levels for example you can select Local Disk, CD-ROM, or Floppy.
From Local disk boot option you can configure a "secondary boot order" for example:
Local Disk:
Local LUN
SD card
Internal USB
External USB
In this case the unit will see the first option in the Local disk Option (local hard drives) as it is the main option.
I hope this helps!
