I don't want to make any assumptions about you budget, but IMHO your money would be better spent on a newer server platform like an M4 or M5. The drive trays are the same between M3's and M4's as are the power supplies. You would need new CPU's and memory. I still keep some M4 bones around, but I literally threw away all the M3 stuff. I am an equipment pack rat, so that should tell you something....

I have only used NDFC as a VM inside ESXi. I don't recall if an M3 can run anything later than ESXi 6.7, but certainly no later than 7.0. Are you try to do a bare metal install on an M3? If so, that seems unlikely to work regardless of the disks you are using.

I expect it would work since most 12G SAS devices are backward compatible with 6G SAS. The controllers in the M3 series are only 6G capable. The LSI 2008 card is what was used on the mezzanine card controllers, and it is on the slow side. I think you will not get your money's worth from those drives since you aren't going to be able to use their full performance with the server/controller you have.

My advice to you is to not spend anything on trying to improve an M3 platform. I think that would be money thrown away.
Look at what you want to run in your lab and find the required hardware to run that. Then you can see what fits into your budget.
