The UCS Platform Emulator (PE) is a version of the UCS Manager that runs in a hypervisor (VMWare, Hyper-V). No UCS hardware is required to run UCS PE. And the UCS Platform Emulator is completely free (Cisco.com login required).
Whenever I try and import my logical configuration backup from my production system I end up with a config in UCSPE that is empty.
Hi Simon,
Please note restoring full state backup from UCSM to UCSPE is not supported. All the other backups such as All-Config, System and Logical backup are supported. To import it, launch UCSM from the control panel of UCSPE, navigate to Admin tab -> Click on All -> On the Right Hand side -> Click on "Import Configuration" and browse to the back up file and import it.
From the control panel of UCSPE, we also have an option of importing the hardware config running on a live UCS system to the emulator.
Browse the IP address configured on UCSPE in the browser. Please follow the below steps mentioned,
Step 1 : In the Navigation pane, click the Emulator Settings menu tab.
Step 2 Click Start-up Inventory.
Step 3 On the Startup Hardware Inventory page, click the Import Equipment from Live UCS icon on the icon
bar.
Step 4 In the Cisco UCS Server field, enter the web link for the Cisco UCS Manager GUI of the Cisco UCS domain
from which you want to import the equipment.
Step 5 Enter a valid user name and password for the Cisco UCS domain.
Any user with read-only or higher privileges can access the hardware inventory configuration.
Step 6 Click Load.
Step 7 Restart the Cisco UCS Platform Emulator VM to overwrite and replace the existing hardware inventory
configuration with the new one, as follows:
a) On the Startup Hardware Inventory page, click the Restart Emulator with this Hardware Setup icon
on the icon bar.
b) In the Are you sure you want to reset UCSM Database and Restart UCS Emulator now? field, click
the Yes radio button.
c) Click Reset UCSM Database and Restart UCS Emulator.
After restart, UCSPE will restart with the config similar to your live UCS system.

Hi Ron,
Which version of UCSPE are you using to import?
The XML file you are trying to import contains which type of backup? (Full-State or All-Config or System or Logical)
Regards,
Sharan Sridhar
All-config,
I have tried ucs 3, 2.21a and now i am installing the latest 2.2 version.
When I try a backup to the local system it works also when I import this
again,
But when I try to import a customers XML file, version 2.2 (1e) is fails.
tnx for your thoughts
Ron

I know this is an old post, but it always comes up first when I search for help with UCS PE. I have imported a live environment, but the service profiles do not populate. They are nowhere to be found. The tool is somewhat limited without being able to include the service profiles. Cisco's documentation is limited, and the internet does not have much info on actually using it.
