Advantage Series: UCS Servers and Server Management

UCS Servers and Server Management

S-1: UCS Service Profiles and Templates

Introduces the service profile and template concepts that are central to the server-centric, stateless management model of UCS

S-2: UCS Server Pre-Provisioning

Discusses how to take the concepts of template configuration and service profile creation in order to completely pre-configure your environment and LAN and SAN infrastructure for a service profile before you even have a physical server to apply it to. You can minimize provisioning time once you get a new server to basically zero --- insert the new server, let it configure itself, and boot it.

S-3: UCS BIOS Policies

Discusses application of BIOS settings associated with a service profile by using BIOS Policies.  This prevents you from ever having to get into the BIOS (F2) interface of a server to set BIOS properties.

S-4: UCS Server RAID Policies

Shows how to configure  local disk RAID on servers under control of UCS Manager by using Local Disk Configuration policies that are referred to by service profiles or service profile templates.  Discusses protected and unprotected configuraions.

S-5: UCS Server Firmware Policies

Shows how to manage firmware levels  in UCS servers so that settings automatically "follow" a service profile (logical server) as it is associated to a server., using Firmware Policies / packages.

S-6: Ease of Cloning and Deploying Servers within UCS

Shows the advantages of templates / server pools / quick deployment of servers in UCS -- providing higher levels of availability both within and between data centers.  Demonstrates the use of UCS Powershell scripts to move service profiles between UCS systems in different data centers.

S-7: Server Pools and Qualifications

Shows how UCS server pools can be created and modified dynamically using various hardware criteria such as memory, CPU, and network interfaces.

S-9: Maintenance Policy

Discusses how maintenance policy allows you to change objects affecting a large number of service profiles and put the changes into individual pending states for each service profile, in order to control when they get rebooted to make the changes.

S-10: UCS System High Availability

Discusses High Availability in UCS specifically during the firmware upgrade process

S-11: Configuring UCS with PowerShell

Demonsrates powershell cmdlets designed to automate UCS management  with powerfull command-line operations  on a single UCS or across multiple UCS sites

S-13: Monitoring UCS with BMC BPPM

Shows how BMC ProactiveNet Performance Manager can be used to monitor performance and status/errors on UCS

S-14: UCS and SCVMM Integration

Shows integration of UCS management into Microsoft System Center VM Management product using the Cisco UCS plugin for SCVMM

S-15: Configuring Smart Call-Home in UCS

Shows how to configure the UCS manager call-home elements that enable automatic sending of email for events / errors / inventory of the system.

S-16: Enhancing Smart Callhome with Anonymous Customer Experience Feedback

Shows how to enable anonymous feedback

S-17: UCS Organizations and Roles

Discusses how UCS Organizations and roles are enable to implement a form of multitenancy in UCS Manager. Demonstrates how AD or any other LDAP authentication service can be used to map directory groups to UCS roles.

S-18: Automating VMware Server Upgrades
