Communication between Cisco UCS 6120XP 20-Port Fabric Interconnect and Brocade FCX648

Hi

Here is the Scenario and Problem of our issue.

Scenario: 2 x Cisco UCS 6120 XP Fabric Interconnects connected to the 10 GbE ports on the FCX-648 E. The ports on the Cisco UCS are configured as trunk ports. The 10 GbE ports on the Brocade switch are configured as tagged VLAN ports,  two 1 GbE ports are configured as untagged ports for connectivity to laptops. The only VLAN configured on the UCS and on the Brocade switch is VLAN 101.

Problem: Given the above configuration, we are unable to ping the UCS devices on VLAN 101 from a laptops connected to the Brocade switch.

Let us know whethere it is possible or 6120 Fabric Interconnect works only with Cicso devices?

Regards,

Amit Vyas

UCS is standards based and is plays nicely with other hardware, there's no operability restriction to Cisco devices.

When you say you are not able to ping the "UCS devices", do you mean you are not able to ping the cluster IP of the 6120s?  Or are you trying to ping servers in the chassis?

Here UCS Device stand for Blade server. We have assign 4 IP to 4 Blad server in 2 Chassi which is like below and all these server have VMWare vSphere 4.1 ESXi installed on it.

ChassiA_Blade1 - 192.168.3.25

ChassiA_Blade2 - 192.168.3.26

ChassiB_Blade1 - 192.168.3.27

ChassiB_Blade2 - 192.168.3.28

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

One Laptop which is connected on Brocade FCX648 have 192.168.3.30 and 172.16.1.5 IP address.

We are able to communicate inbetween blade servers, but when we are trying to ping any of the blade server from Laptop we are getting "Destination host Unreachable"

Though we tried pinging Cluster IP of Interconnect which is 172.16.1.3 we were unable to reach this too

Fabric Interconnect A: 172.16.1.1

Fabric Interconnect B: 172.16.1.2

Can the ESX hosts ping each other?  It sounds for all the world like somewhere between the blades in the chassis and the hosts connected to the brocade switch, that a VLAN isn't known by something somewhere.  Does the switch have the VLANs configured that the vNICs on the blades have?

The interconnects should be on a seperate management network, so in order to ping those the connectivity will be different again.

ESX hosts can ping each other.

Yes, switch have only one VLAN 101 configured on it and the vNIC on the blade server is part of VLAN 101.

Is the interface where the 6100 connects to the Switch setup as a "Trunk" port?  The 6100 will tag all traffic coming from the UCS.  Ensure it's a trunk, and not an access port.

Where in your enivornment does your laptop plug in?  Directly to the Brocade switch also?  Ensure your laptop port is configured as an "Access port" for vlan 101.

Robert

Yes, the interface where the 6100 connects to the Switch setup as a trunk port.

Laptop is directly connected to Brocade switch and its configured as a Access port for VLAN 101.

Amit,

You're talking about two different/distinct data paths potentially.

You mention that your laptop has "two ip addresses"  Well unless you have two adapters configured (ie. wireless & LAN) this will be a problem.  From each interface on your laptop you can only have a single gateway.

The Fabric Interconnect addresses will only be reachable through the "Management" interfaces on the devices.

Assuming the "Blade IPs" you mention are referring to the service console or Management VMK ports, these addresses are only reachable through the Uplink Ports on the Fabric Interconnects.

Are you sure you've configured the laptop with the appropriate IP & VLAN?

Regards,

Robert

Robert,

I am very much sure that we have configured appropriate IPs and VLAN for our laptop.

Even we have tried to keep only one IP on laptop which is 192.168.3.30.

We have also configured Interconnect Fabric Port 7 as a Uplink which is going to Brocade switch after this also we are not able to reach to blade servers.

We have idea about if we want to reach Mangement network we need to have different configuration for it.

-- Just want to know that is there any know problem for connectivity between 6120 Interconnect Fabric and Brocade switch ??

Amit, a switch should be a switch should be a switch, Brocade or otherwise.  Unless there's some reason it's not on that VLAN properly?  Can you ping a blade from the switch? Can you ping the laptop from the switch?

Geordie,

We know its just a switch, We are not able to reach to blade server from switch also.

So, is this solved or not? Any public info on the reasons and solution would be nice to know.

Thanks
